Company Overview
As a women-owned organic produce distributor with nearly 50 years of experience, Veritable Vegetable purchases, transports and supplies the highest quality organic fruits and vegetables on the market. We actively improve the sustainable food system by supporting organic farmers, increasing access to fresh produce, strengthening communities and cultivating a fair and dynamic workplace. What makes us unique is our commitment to running the business based on values rather than the bottom line. We believe in using the power of business to solve social and environmental challenges and have been certified as a B Corporation. Our company culture stresses high integrity relationships, quality produce, minimal environmental impact and active involvement in the community.
Company History
Beginning in the early 1970’s, VV became part of a movement that sought to bring low-cost, nutritious food to neighborhood co-ops and community storefronts. This collective, called The People’s Food System, extended throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and provided a large-scale alternative to the existing corporate food system.
During this time, an increasing number of farmers rediscovered organic farming and developed new organic production techniques. Many growers struggled to survive in the face of agribusiness and suburban development. VV established relationships with many of these growers and began distributing produce beyond the original People’s Food System, simultaneously seeking to promote sustainable agriculture and extend knowledge about organic food and agricultural issues.
Through the years, VV has been an integral part of change in the sustainable food system movement by stimulating an increased demand for fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, developing certification standards, working to pass food and agriculture legislation, helping to unify the produce community, and supplying healthy, fresh foods to communities all over California and beyond.
Maintaining Our Roots
In the early days of the People's Food System, the unifying principle was "food for people, not for profit." These words still resonate for our business today. Though our business has grown, we continue to operate with the greater community in mind, offering fair prices when buying, selling, and hauling, and providing good wages, benefits, and equipment to our staff. Economic success allows us to contribute to projects and causes we believe in, and to translate our values into action.
