The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, forming the centerpiece of the University’s health research, teaching and patient care missions. URMC is made up of many parts, all devoted to the same three goals: Providing highly advanced medical care, discovering cures for the world's most challenging diseases, and educating the doctors, dentists and nurses of tomorrow.
URMC includes Strong Memorial Hospital, the Golisano Children’s Hospital, Wilmot Cancer Institute, Eastman Institute for Oral Health, the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Nursing.
Company History
In 1850, the University of Rochester was founded by a convention of Baptists. Presently, the University of Rochester is home to the River Campus, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Eastman School of Music, and the Memorial Art Gallery.
URMC was founded in 1921, and George Hoyt Whipple was recruited from the University of California at San Francisco to become the first dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. The medical school opened in 1925 and Strong Memorial Hospital opened its doors as a 250-bed community facility. The University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry graduated its first class in 1929.
