Company History
Merakey is a not-for-profit developmental, behavioral health, and education provider. We offer a variety of services to individuals and communities across the country. We offer these services to 50,000+ people each year at nearly 700 locations, all focused on one goal.
Putting our heart and soul into exceptional care.
Our journey started with the passing of the Community Mental Health Act of 1963. This act provided federal funding for services to support the mentally disabled. Our founders wrote a proposal to use some of these funds to open the Northwest Center, one of the first service providers in Philadelphia.
The Northwest Center opened its doors at 27 E. Mt Airy Avenue in Philadelphia in October 1969. Its legacy lives on, first as Northwestern Human Services, and since 2018 as Merakey. The name Merakey is based on a Greek word that means to put something of yourself in your work, which is what we do every day as we work on our mission of helping those who need it most. From one site in Philadelphia, we have grown into one of the largest non-profit human services providers in the country.
