Company History

Patagonia's founder, Yvon Chouinard, got his start as a blacksmith making and selling climbing gear to support his trips to the mountains. As his business grew, he set up shop in an old tin shed at the edge of the oil-patch town of Ventura, California. During the summer he climbed, and during the winter he surfed.

In the early ‘70s, hardware began to give way to soft goods. Over the years, Patagonia expanded to make technical clothing and travel gear built for climbing, skiing, snowboarding, fly fishing and surfing. For the latter, Patagonia builds the world’s finest surfboards (Fletcher Chouinard Designs), wetsuits, board shorts and sportswear. Patagonia has also begun to make high-quality food and to publish books appropriate to our mission. All our products embody a bias toward quality, simplicity, utility and environmental consciousness.
