Company Profile

Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD)
Company Overview
Mission: We protect public health and the waters of Hampton Roads by treating wastewater effectively.
Vision: Future generations will inherit clean waterways and be able to keep them clean.
Company History
HRSD, a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia, was created by public referendum in 1940 to eliminate sewage pollution in the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
HRSD owes its creation to oysters, a robust seafood industry in the early 1900s. The Virginia Department of Health condemned a large oyster producing area in 1925, bringing the question of sewage pollution to light.
As the region has grown and its needs expanded, HRSD has remained dedicated to protecting and enhancing the environment. We have attained an environmental record that is the envy of the wastewater industry, where we are recognized as industry leaders. Because of this high level of commitment, the residents of the communities we serve are able to enjoy fully the benefits of our local waterways.
