Foundation for NIH
Company Overview
The FNIH (Foundation for the National Institutes of Health) is a leader in addressing complex scientific and health issues. Established by the U.S. Congress to support the mission of the NIH, the FNIH is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that brings new resources to a broad portfolio of programs and projects that enhance the activities and priorities of the NIH and the biomedical community.
Company History
As an agency of the Federal Government, the NIH and its employees are prohibited from engaging in fund-raising, solicitation, or other related activities. NIH can receive unsolicited donations from private donors and foundations through the Congressionally authorized “gift fund,” but NIH cannot engage in the customary donor cultivation and recognition activities that are the hallmark of successful non-profit fundraising organizations. The NIH is strictly prohibited in engaging in the type of donor development that is one of the primary purposes of a Kresge challenge grant.
Recognizing this limitation and believing that it would be beneficial to the public good for the private sector to be able to be more involved with helping to advance the NIH mission, Congress enacted a specific and unique law that established the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, Inc. (FNIH). Under this law (42 U.S.C. 290b), FNIH exists as a non-profit charitable organization that can solicit and accept gifts, grants and other donations on behalf of and in support of NIH programs and projects. 42 U.S.C. 290b(c)(1).
Under this law, FNIH exists solely as an entity to work in collaboration with the NIH, and the FNIH may not undertake activities that are independent of those of the NIH. Similarly, according to this law, the FNIH is the sole entity responsible for carrying out private solicitation activities in support of and in collaboration with the NIH
