Company History
1835 - First permanent settlement established by Charles Hart (17 other families arrived later in the year)
1836 - United States Road built from Milwaukee through Wauwatosa and on to Madison (part of present-day Harwood Avenue)
1837 - First sawmill built by Charles Hart
1840 - Town of Wauwatosa created by Act of Legislature of Wisconsin Territory
1841 - Grist mill built by Charles Hart; first public school building erected
1842 - Township organized; first town board meeting
(Wauwatosa Township originally extended from Greenfield Avenue to Hampton Avenue and from 27th Street to 124th Street, encompassing sections of present-day Milwaukee and West Allis)
1854 - Little Red Store built (building still stands south of the Menomonee River beneath the Harmonee bridge)
1871 - First high school built on current site of Wauwatosa East
1882 - First public library established
1892 - Village of Wauwatosa incorporated (population 2,248)
(Village boundaries: W. Wisconsin Avenue on the south, N. 60th Street on the east, W. Wright Street on the north, and Swan Boulevard, the Milwaukee Road tracks, and N. 84th Street on the west)
1895 - Fire destroyed a large part of the village (buildings were largely wood frame and siding)
1897 - Wauwatosa chartered as a city
1898 - Fire house and city hall built on present-day Underwood Avenue
1915 - First full-time police force established
1952/54 - City of Wauwatosa annexed 8 1/2 square miles from the Town of Wauwatosa
