The Great Courses are delivered to customers via digital streaming, DVD, and CD sales; through The Great Courses Plus, a digital video subscription platform that PC Magazine has called “Netflix for Learning”, and other third party digital distribution vehicles, including Amazon Instant Video, Amazon Channels, Comcast Xfinity Video on Demand, Audible.com, Recorded Books, Kanopy, Hoopla, and more.

The Great Courses also has highly rated apps available across most major app platforms, including iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Amazon Alexa.

Vice President, People

The Teaching Company is looking for a Vice President, People to join their Executive Leadership Team. This position will be responsible for directing, leading and implementing all people functions of the organization. The VP role will focus on creating an employee-oriented, high performance culture that emphasizes empowerment, quality, productivity and standards, retention and development of a workforce of 250 employees in our Chantilly, Virginia office.

We are looking for a highly experienced, motivated self-starter, who can effectively prioritize and accomplish objectives in a fast-paced environment and become a trusted advisor to the management team for all people related matters. This position requires both strategy and consultation, and active participation with the People Team, Executive and Extended Leadership Teams.

Reports to: President & CEO

Direct Reports: Sr. Human Resources Business Partner, Human Resources Business Partner, and Executive Administrative Assistant/Office Coordinator 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, lead and work alongside HR team to manage the HR operations for the company to include all areas of the employee lifecycle - recruiting, onboarding, training, coaching and development, employee relations and retention, performance management, compensation, health and welfare benefit, and terminations
  • Develops programs to allow the company to embrace applicants and employees of all backgrounds
  • Lead company communication and feedback channels for employees through such avenues as company announcement emails, company meetings, and bi-monthly newsletter
  • Lead committees such as the President’s Council with the CEO, and various Employee Engagement Focus Groups as needed
  • Participate and share HR data and information in the monthly Company All-Hands Meetings and Quarterly Extended Leadership Meetings
  • Manage and communicate results of the employee engagement survey
  • Develop and implement the annual wellness program
  • Partner with the Leadership team to (re) define culture and implement that across the organization as the company thinks about rebranding over the next year or so
  • Maintain responsibility for company compliance with labor, employment law, ERISA, and safety-related regulation and legislation and ensure compliance pertaining to all personnel matters
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation; work with the company’s General Counsel as required on personnel matters and corporate HR compliance responsibilities
  • Make recommendations for improvement of company policies, procedures and practices on employee and personnel matters aimed at increasing employee satisfaction and retention
  • Work directly with department managers to advise and coach them in carrying out their responsibilities on Human Resources matters such as the annual performance review process, employee relations, counseling, performance improvement plans, and coaching/feedback
  • Conducts investigations when employee concerns are brought forth; manages the corporate ethics reporting hotline
  • Partner with CFO to manage company benefits to include broker relationships, analysis of benefit renewals, selection of benefits with leadership, and communicating and educating employees on annual benefit options; stays current on benefit legislation and industry trends
  • Interviews management and executive level candidates along with other leadership team members
  • Defines all HR training programs, and assigns the authority / responsibility of Human Resources and managers within those programs; provides necessary education and materials to managers and employees including workshops, manuals, employee handbooks, and standardized reports

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and 15 + years related experience required; SPHR or SHRM CP/SCP certification desired
  • Experience with Ultipro, Payscale, LinkedIn Learning, and Gartner a plus
