Summary               

Founded in 2007, the National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR) is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Chicago. NCTR’s mission is to grow and manage a national network of teacher residencies dedicated to accelerating student achievement through the training, support, and retention of excellent teachers.  

Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief of Staff & Talent (CoST), the Director of Talent will direct, develop, and coordinate the policies and activities of the talent/human resources (HR) department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organization’s mission and talent strategy. The ideal candidate will have a background as an HR generalist with a dedication to putting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at the forefront of their work. This is an exciting opportunity to join a small but growing organization. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the hiring and onboarding process, including advertising open positions, reviewing resumes, conducting interviews, managing the hiring committee, conducting reference checks, drafting offer letters, and leading the onboarding process for new employees
  • Support the Chief of Staff & Talent in developing and implementing best-in-class DEI practices that build and retain a talent pipeline reflective of the communities NCTR serves 
  • Identify and maintain NCTR’s remote working environment to ensure staff satisfaction and a productive work culture
  • Ensure that a strong performance management model is in place, including planning organizational and individual goals, assessing performance, developing professional skills, and recognizing contributions that advance NCTR’s mission
  • Build the capacity of leaders across the organization by ensuring that managers are invested in talent development and equipped with the resources, skills, and mindsets to effectively manage and develop their teams
  • Advise and guide managers on employee issues; assist in resolving issues as needed
  • Administer employee benefits
  • Maintain accurate, current personnel records in NCTR’s payroll provider platform, benefits platform, and any other HRIS solutions.
  • Develop and manage internal controls for NCTR, e.g. travel policy, reimbursement policy, compensation policy, etc.
  • Collect, analyze, and use data (staff satisfaction surveys, other internal surveys, Promise 54 surveys, and individual qualitative data collection) to strengthen NCTR’s culture, make the organization more equitable in all that it does, ensure staff feel heard and valued, and identify needs for professional development and DEI training
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of national and local legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Manage and develop direct reports as needed


Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources/related field or equivalent experience required
  • Master’s degree or another relevant graduate or professional degree, PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience with 5 years in a human resources role, preferably in a national context
  • Demonstrated deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion 
  • Ability to implement creative, concrete, and pragmatic ways to address or prevent potential equity challenges and mitigate bias in the hiring process
  • Broad knowledge of payroll and other HR systems, processes, regulations, and policies
  • Advanced understanding of state and federal labor laws and compliance; familiarity within a national context preferred
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail 
  • Ability to work effectively and prioritize in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, and to juggle several projects at once with flexibility
  • Energy and creativity in addressing talent issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technology skills, including knowledge of Google Workspace with the ability to learn and adapt to new technical systems

Benefits and Salary

The starting salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000 annually and is commensurate with experience. In addition, a comprehensive benefits package is included. 

Location

This is a remote position, but location in the Chicago area is preferred.
