Facing History and Ourselves uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. For more than 40 years, Facing History has provided a transformative experience for educators and their students, and the mindsets and skills we foster — empathy for others, critical thinking, moral reasoning, and sense of agency — help to create a world guided by knowledge and compassion.

Facing History operates from 9 offices in the United States, Canada, and the UK, includes 185+ staff members, and maintains a budget of approximately $30 million. Facing History continues to expand its reach globally, with educational partnerships in countries around the world, including France, Northern Ireland, South Africa, and China. Our 5 year strategic plan calls for dramatically increased impact by extending Facing History’s network of teachers, schools, and districts, through strategic partnerships, online tools, and community conversations. In the first two years of the plan, Facing History already doubled its impact from about 50,000 to 100,000 implementing teachers, and the organization is on track to double this scope yet again over the coming three years.

The world is in dire need of this kind of education.  The success of Facing History’s strategic plan will be driven in part by increased investments in staff, both current and new.  We are implementing HR strategies to ensure that our staff have the skills needed to meet our goals, that our culture taps the contributions of everyone within a climate based on positive values, and that our managers have the skills needed to lead in ways that fully engage and tap the potential of their teams.

The Role

To meet the needs of a growing organization, HR has transitioned from a team of generalists to a group where team members are focusing on defined lanes of activity.  Our focus is "Talent" and the primary areas of activity are: "Talent Acquisition", "Talent Management', and "Talent Growth & Development." The "Talent" focus underscores the positive mission of the team in relation to hiring, retaining, growing, and servicing the best staff possible. This will enable us to create a model workplace that reflects the communities we serve and which is inclusive and engaging for all.  

The Director of Talent and Growth Development is an exciting opportunity to pioneer a new position that consolidates functions that were shared in the past.  This individual will provide and implement an overall vision for the Talent Development area at Facing History. Leading from a growth mindset perspective, they will support and coach supervisors across the organization.  They will build professional development and performance feedback systems that promote staff engagement, self-management, accountability, and the advancement and retention of talent.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary partner for all supervisors, promoting their ability to set clear goals and provide regular and consistent feedback that leads their staff to success

  • Coach managers through employee relations issues using a growth mindset

  • Apply strategies and systems that promote “self-management” elements, including pulse checks, regular self-reporting on progress and challenges from staff to managers, and regular feedback from managers to their staff

  • Work to regularize job titles and define sequential career steps for staff advancement

  • Oversee staff learning beginning with orientation, ensuring that leaders of each department and office maintain individual staff development plans.

Candidate Profile

We would highlight the following performance and personal competencies required for the position:

  • The ideal candidate will be passionate about Facing History’s mission, and possess a commitment to the positive frame and focus of “Talent” that will be inspiring to their colleagues.

  • They will be highly organized, articulate, and a strong presenter, while also modelling listening skills that build relationships and connections across functions

  • They will be deeply experienced in directly training and coaching managers individually and in groups on best practices, knowledgeable about promoting a growth mindset, and facile in offering strategies and language for conducting crucial conversations when needed. 

  • They will understand how to build an integrated approach that promotes staff engagement, growth and development- from orientation through various career stages.  

  • They will be familiar with, and a convincing champion for, new systems that promote regular and rapid feedback.

  • They will be an HR professional with 10-15 years of progressive experience with a focus on training, coaching, and employee relations. They will be an effective supervisor of individuals and teams; they will have led a specific area of HR or the entire function.
