Positon Description:

SEAS is seeking a proven leader to oversee all human resources functions including recruiting, reclassification, compensation, employee relations, performance management, and training and development. Working in collaboration with leadership, provide consultation, oversight and support for academic HR services and staff HR services for SEAS. Contributes to our positive and inclusive work community by building trusting partnerships across the school, continually learning, creating impactful experiences, and working with a sense of ownership for outcomes. Approaches this work with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in mind; treating others with respect, dignity, and in a manner where individuals feel they belong; listens, values feedback, and learns from the perspectives of others.

15% Remains abreast of, recommends, interprets and oversees the implementation of university policies as well as applicable laws and regulations. Reviews and makes recommendations for improvement of the school’s policies, procedures and practices on HR matters that result in the recruitment and retention of a diverse, capable staff to support the SEAS’ mission. Interpret the LEO and GEO labor contracts and resolves issues.

25% Provide guidance to managers and supervisors regarding recruiting faculty and staff, which may involve assisting in developing job descriptions and specifications, preparing job postings, and interviewing and selecting candidates. Provide guidance to managers and supervisors in the use and application of salary ranges and increase guidelines, job evaluation plans, classification of new positions, changes of status, transfers, promotions, performance appraisals, salary review and salary adjustments and terminations. Work with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale and engagement, and increase productivity and retention.

40% Manage and direct the activities and staff involved in developing and maintaining human resources activities, policies and procedures. Ensures smooth operation of workforce planning, recruiting and selection, training and development, compensation and classification, visa processing, and implementation of process regarding all HR functions. Develops new approaches to continually improve the efficiency of the department and services performed. Supervise and approve preparation of appointment paperwork for faculty, GSI, staff, visitor and temporary hiring and appointment changes. Manage the LEO appointment, reappointment, review and layoff guidelines as noted in the LEO contract. Provide oversight for HR related internal controls process. Serves as the primary SEAS HR liaison for campus HR committees and central UM HR functions. Partner with faculty search committees in the faculty hiring process, ensuring postings are in line with University and SEAS guidelines and are posted properly within and outside the University.

20% Lead the development of programs and strategies to support ongoing growth and capability of SEAS. Assesses developmental needs to drive training initiatives and identifies and arranges suitable training solutions for employees. Actively searches, creatively designs and implements effective methods to educate, enhance performance and recognize performance. Provide leadership for human resources projects and initiatives by gathering, validating and evaluating data and relevant metrics to develop proposals and recommendations.


Required Qualifications

  • Commitment to diversity and staff development.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in Human Resources, Business
  • Administration or other relevant field or appropriate combination of education and professional experience.
  • Significant and progressive experience (~8 years) in related human resources positions, of which a minimum of 1 year includes supervision of an HR team or service in a lead role.
  • Successful supervisory and leadership experience with the ability to bring out the best in performance for individuals and teams.
  • Extensive experience interpreting and implementing HR policies and procedures.
  • Excellent planning skills including the ability to take initiative, work independently, manage multiple priorities, follow through, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in handling complex, confidential matters.
  • Proven experience working with multiple stakeholders at all levels, ability to listen and understand the needs of the business.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, good team building skills and ability to champion change to others.
  • Must interface and communicate effectively with leadership, staff, and the greater UM community.
  • Proven proficiency with Business Objects or similar data query tool and conceptual understanding of how to leverage technology to provide analysis.
  • Proficient with MS Office or comparable software, email, and HR databases and information systems such as PeopleSoft
  • Extensive knowledge of U-M policies and procedures related to both academic and staff human resource management.
