The primary function of the Retirement Analyst/Retirement Analyst Floater within the Office of Customer Service is to deliver superior value to participants / employers as specified within the MERS strategic plan and vision. This position requires a high level of professionalism, positive attitude, and excellent communication skills while working in a team environment. Working under the supervision of the Lead Retirement Coordinator/Manager, this position is responsible formeeting established metrics for measurement and processing a variety of transactions for MERS’ active, terminated, deferred, and retired participants, including but not limited to retirement, benefit calculation and service credit purchase requests, refunds, deaths, legal documents, insurance deductions, etc. This position will also assist the Senior Analysts with content development for processes and procedures to ensure the team is consistently processing transactions accurately. The Retirement Analyst Floater position will provide support to all functional areas within the Customer Support Team as outlined above and below as needed for special projects, staff absences, and high work volumes.



Defined Benefit & Hybrid (DB) Duties:

  • Review, process, and execute participant requests related to:
    • Regular and disability retirement applications and any recalculation of benefit as necessary (disability application review will also consist of seeking required documentation, e.g., medical and financial documents, etc., along with ensuring proper evaluation occurs with medical advisor and/or MERS Legal team
    • Benefit estimate (pension values and deferred-eligibles) and service credit purchase calculations (and Release Deferred Obligations) for future retirement benefits; along with posting of approved service credit after required documentation is received
    • Review and process participants’ part-time service requests, pension verifications, beneficiary designations, membership applications, name/address changes, and direct deposit (EFT) and tax (federal/state) withholding requests
    • Deaths including beneficiary/estate processes; monthly death audit reviews
    • Applications or requests for repayment of refunds (including review of post termination reports for issuance of second refund, as needed)
    • Settlement agreements
    • Eligibility service (Act 88, MERS to MERS, and Other Governmental)
    • Terminated-purged record requests
  • Support Senior Business Analysts with coordination and entry of new employer groups with any immediate requests for service; review and processing of high touch transactions; and upload of active, terminated, and retired groups, along with issuance of payment to new retirees joining system.
  • Conduct annual disability income verification/offset process
  • Process group and individual transfers of employees between employer groups or divisions
  • Process and balance Defined Benefit/Hybrid-DB retiree pension payments, replacement vouchers working with Finance to ensure accurate 1099R information is maintained, along with but not limited to:
    • Research / Issuance of replacement 1099Rs
    • Suspensions and reinstatements for retirees working after retirement
    • Insurance deductions, reconcile bills, and generate monthly billing for multiple employer-participant groups
    • Friend of the court orders, garnishments, and tax levies, etc.


Eligible Domestic Relations Order (EDRO/DRO) Duties:

  • Work with Legal on review of Order to determine eligibility
  • Correspond with active, terminated, deferred, and retired participants, beneficiaries, alternate payees, and the Actuary for pension impact
  • Interpret and understand complexity of Order and provide where needed a detailed explanation to involved parties
  • Calculate and process (set-up for payment) division of benefits for parties involved working with Legal and Actuary as needed


Defined Contribution, Hybrid (DC), HCSP, and 457 Duties:

  • Work with external record-keeper to assist with communications for problem resolution in processing requests for distributions, loans, participant deaths, and any domestic relations orders associated with participant directed accounts


Other Miscellaneous Duties:

  • Interaction with participants and employers via phone, e-mail, and face-to-face
  • Assist with software testing and backup department staff as needed
  • Cross training with staff and other teams as required
  • Assist with special projects as needed (process redesign and implementation, system testing, participant data clean-up, etc.)
  • Assist with updating / writing team procedures as needed
  • Assist educational team with one-on-one counseling sessions for both scheduled and non-scheduled meetings in office or offsite, as needed


Retirement Analyst Floater may process, as needed, transactional items from the Document Support Team, which may include, but is not limited to:

    • Process and prepare all incoming documents received (mail, fax, internal staff, email, employers, portals, and website) by OCS for scanning workflow documents into records management system, and create necessary workflows as needed
    • Process returned mail, print faxes daily, and gather data for workflows and distribute to Analysts; create CRM tasks, purging documents, perform maintenance on scanners
    • Order microfiche as required for workflows created

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience working in a customer service environment with demonstrated superior customer service aptitude
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of MERS products and processes
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
