Towne Bank is currently recruiting for a Payroll Tax Accountant to join its human resources department in Suffolk, Virginia. This is a newly created position, reporting to the payroll manager, with specific responsibility for TowneBank’s complex, multi-state, multi-entity payroll tax function. The successful candidate will have at least seven years’ experience in a multi-state, multi-entity payroll tax environment with at least 1,000 employees; have experience reconciling and preparing monthly, quarterly and annual payroll tax reports and returns; and, possess an American Payroll Association Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification. Full details and requirements, as follows:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Reconcile all wage and tax accumulators after each payroll 
  • Monitor and reconcile payroll tax deposits made by third party vendor 
  • Maintain and execute quarter end and year end checklists 
  • Reconcile, approve and validate all tax returns prepared by third party vendor
  • Develop, maintain and monitor the compliant employment tax and FLSA set up of all earnings and deduction codes in HRIS (UltiPro)
  • Ensure that all earnings and deductions codes in HRIS (UltiPro) are mapped appropriately for Form W-2 reporting purposes 
  • Reconcile, approve and validate the preparation of W-2s, and facilitate corrections if needed 
  • Gather SUI rates and ensure HRIS (UltiPro) is updated appropriately 
  • Assist with processing all taxable fringe benefits (ex: gifts, stock) 
  • Coordinate new payroll tax state/local account registrations 
  • Monitor changes in regulations, and update processes accordingly to ensure accuracy and compliance 
  • Validate employee local tax set-up in HRIS (UltiPro) 
  • Submit employee withholding certificates to states as required 
  • Assist the Accounting Department with GL posting and reconciliation 
  • Research and resolve tax agency notices 
  • Knowledgeable in employment tax required transactions on all HR/Payroll integrations resulting from mergers/acquisitions
  • Assist payroll and HR staff with questions about tax set-up for employees 
  • Handle other duties or special projects as assigned
  • Obey all applicable federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)

Requirements

Minimum Required Skills or Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or Human Resources
  • 7 years of experience in a multi-state, multi-entity payroll tax environment with at least 1000 employees
  • Experience reconciling and preparing monthly, quarterly and annual payroll tax reports and returns
  • Must be detail oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact tactfully and professionally with all levels of employees
  • Must be efficient, thorough and work well with little or no supervision
  • Must possess the highest qualities of integrity, discretion, strong work ethics and the ability to maintain extreme confidentiality
  • High level of proficiency in automated payroll and HR systems, Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Valid American Payroll Association Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification

Desired Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience processing payroll in UltiPro
