The University of Wisconsin-Madison is looking for a Chief of Staff for the Office of Human Resources. The Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) is responsible for providing leadership for the campus human resources programs and effectively driving initiatives (current and future). The Chief of Staff serves as the senior advisor to the CHRO and is responsible for a broad variety of management activities in the Office of Human Resources (OHR). These activities include shepherding projects, managing OHR internal operations, and working with stakeholders to address challenges/find solutions (OHR ambassador). The successful candidate will work cooperatively with the HR community in a multitude of program areas including employment relations, benefit administration, talent recruitment and assessment, employee diversity and engagement, employee assistance, talent development, HR information systems, compensation administration, and other integral areas.

Qualified candidates will have extensive experience successfully juggling multiple projects with differing priorities, working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders to address complex issues, and embracing different perspectives to achieve objectives. Preferred qualifications would include providing professional support to a program executive in a large organization.


Principal duties:


  • In collaboration with CHRO, develop strategies to address challenges and competing priorities that impact HR programs across campus.
  • Serves as senior advisor and member of the OHR leadership team responsible for following-up on OHR initiatives, and collaborating on strategy development and execution.
  • Supervise and lead key operational functions in OHR including communications, budget, and other managerial support areas as assigned.
  • Provide strategic assistance on key issues, collecting information and working with appropriate staff to shape responses - provide direct oversight and management for key strategic projects.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and regularly update OHR strategic plans and goals.
  • Coordinate and lead the execution of strategic initiatives that cross HR functional areas in OHR.
  • Develop goals and coordinate agendas for OHR meetings (leadership, staff, and ad-hoc) as needed and ensure action items are completed.
  • Demonstrate leadership by building and maintaining a healthy, inclusive and engaging work environment.
  • Serves as representative of the CHRO to campus offices, and committees, and acts on behalf of the CHRO to ensure decisions and key initiatives are effectively implemented.
  • Assess and prioritize issues and questions from campus stakeholders - determine which questions need CHRO involvement or other staff in OHR.
  • Coordinates effective preparation of OHR leadership presentations, analyses, and other materials.
  • Coordinate and lead space management efforts for OHR including major changes to current space configuration.


Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Candidates must have an employment record that demonstrates increasing responsibility and experience. At least five years of experience in higher education, government, or other complex organizations with demonstrated success exercising discretion, collaboration, sound judgement, and strategic planning. Experience in human resources and/or higher education preferred, but not required.

Bachelor's degree required - Graduate or professional degree/certification (MBA, JD, MPP, etc.) a plus.
