The Learning and Development Specialist reports to the Global Talent Development Manager and serves as a knowledgeable and strategic partner to the Ascend HR team in developing talent across the business.  He or she will also provide e-learning/training content development and delivery expertise in order to grow our current and future capability, and achieve long-term business success.


Through partnership with Corporate and Operational Leadership, and the innovative use of technology, the Talent Development Specialist will develop and administer programs and initiatives aligned with talent and learning needs across many talent and learning competencies.



Houston Office primarily with some travel to all of Ascend’s facilities in the US.  Expected travel <25%.



•        Create automated training assignments based upon business training matrices

•        Develop various e-learning courses for different sites and functions as requested

•        Partner with site learning leaders to develop and enhance learning system processes

•        Develop functional career path models as part of the Technical Career Progression program

•        Administer learning system and develop reports and dashboards for internal business clients




•        Collaborates with others to create leadership, training, talent management needs assessments, curriculum, program materials, program/course objectives, etc

•        Manage learning platform (LMS) for including system enhancements and regular updates and maintenance.

•        Teach or facilitate classroom or online classes.

•        Develop and oversee content, course registrations, notifications, and training.

•        Assist with troubleshooting and resolving issues escalated by HR Business partners and end-users in a timely manner.

•        Train and support our global L&D partners on the LMS (i.e., set up learning paths, pull reports, manage content, etc.).

•        Establish and maintain relationships with external partners and liaise between our external vendors.

•        Coordinates the content, speakers, and logistics of various leadership and other learning sessions (summits, Talent Reviews, etc)

•        Develop and maintain strong working relationships with business leaders, HR partners, vendors and other team members to create partnerships that yield success with proven results and credibility.

•        Lead and/or work on cross functional agile HR project teams.

•        Strong customer service orientation and operates in a way that satisfies stakeholder needs and requirements

•        Is a creative problem solver and formulates recommendations using data to clearly demonstrate the value of a solution

•        Is resulted oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects and deliver results even when under pressure

•        Can be objective and direct when necessary, yet remain diplomatic

•        Has excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills

•        Stays current with talent management and learning strategy, trends and best practices

•        Operates with a high degree of integrity in dealing with sensitive information




•        Five years of progressive, focused Talent and Learning Development; experience must be recent and relevant

•        Knows the “mechanics” of succession planning, leadership assessments and development, career pathing, and performance management processes

•        5+ years prior experience in training program design, development, and delivery.

•        3+ years prior experience in learning system management.

•        Basic understanding and competency in of a variety of eLearning development/course authoring tools such as Camtasia, Captivate, Articulate Storyline, and Articulate 360.

•        Able to manage workflow with minimal oversight, in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders and sometimes changing priorities.

•        Data analysis, reporting, and summarizing data for key stakeholders.

•        Project planning and management.

•        Bachelor’s degree required; Extensive experience with blended and/or online learning is required (3 or more years preferred).
