Institute Human Resources Officer

Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas

Silver Spring, Maryland

The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas is an international community of nearly 2,700 Roman Catholic Sisters who sponsor and serve in more than 200 organizations dedicated to help those in need in the U.S., Central and South America, Jamaica, Guam, and the Philippines. The Sisters of Mercy is organized in six geographic Communities, each a separate legal entity, with five based in the U.S. and one overseas.

The Institute Human Resources Officer (IHRO) is a new position that will serve as the lead human resources officer for the organization. The IHRO will work closely with five HR generalist positions that reside in the existing Sisters of Mercy communities. The Sisters of Mercy have been going through massive structural change including the consolidation of 25 regional communities into six in 2009. Given the continuing demographic shift, the strategic decision has been made to evolve to one Mercy organization by 2023. The IHRO will thus enter an environment undergoing organic change that affects structure, policies, practices, and directions.  As these changes occur and roles and responsibilities evolve, the HR generalists will be accountable to the IHRO for promoting and implementing policies and procedures that affect the 1000 employees who are distributed across Sisters of Mercy communities and facilities. In addition, the IHRO will also oversee the provision of back office human resources support for several Mercy entities, including Mercy Investment Services, Mercy Volunteer Corps, the Conference for Mercy Higher Education, and Mercy Education System of the Americas (MESA). The IHRO reports to the Institute Chief Operating Officer (ICOO) and oversees Institute HR operations, the HRIS system, compliance with regulatory requirements, HR legal matters, workforce planning, leadership development, succession planning, and change management.

The IHRO will be a respected leader in HR administration with outstanding technical and interpersonal skills, significant management experience in a complex mission-driven setting, and a strong commitment to service and accountability. Flexibility, creativity, and patience will be needed, together with outstanding communications and influencing skills, complemented by a collegial style that engenders trust and facilitates collaboration. The IHRO must be able to function as a good thought partner to the ICOO and Leadership team and be able to identify possibilities, options, and their implications and to anticipate issues that will require attention.

Requirements include experience as a broadly trained HR professional; a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a professional human resources certification; minimum of 15 years of generalist experience with progressive leadership in human resources and at least five years of executive HR experience; experience in organizational development and change management, oversight of HRIS functions; demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge of cultural differences; ability to think strategically and to compile, analyze, interpret, and integrate information, and to plan and implement projects; strong supervisory experience; the ability to manage effectively in a distributed environment, and to mentor, motivate, and support employees; understanding and support for the sisters of Mercy, including their commitment to diversity and interculturality. Fluency in Spanish would be desirable.

The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas has retained the services of Diversified Search to assist in the search process. All communications will be treated confidentially. Nominations, inquiries, and applications (including a cover letter, resume, and the names of five references) should be directed electronically in confidence toSistersofMercyIHRO@divsearch.com.
