TITLE:        Human Resources Total Rewards Advisor

LOCATION: Central Office


The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 30 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. To serve those students, the district employs approximately 3,650 staff, including more than 1,600 teachers.

Our goal is that "Each student will exit high school prepared for college and careers in a global society, and at every level, performance is on track and on time for success." To help our students achieve this goal, the district is implementing a district-wide initiative called Diploma+.



JOB GOAL: To support personnel at all levels of the organization to achieve excellence through the district’s vision, mission and values.  Foster a culture of support through daily oversight, administration, planning, and communicating of benefit plans, wellness programs, compensation, and rewards and recognitions initiatives.



  • Analyzes wage and salary data to determine competitive compensation plans and provides recommendations for program enhancement.
  • Administers employee benefits programs such as Medical, Dental, Vision, Voluntary plans, KPERS, and the Employee Assistance Program
  • Responds to staff inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs to ensure quick, equitable, and courteous resolution
  • Fosters contacts with outside vendors who provide employee services, such as benefit brokers, plan advisors, and carriers
  • Partner with the KCKPS Finance team to ensure financial controls are in place for all compensation programs
  • Plans and conducts new employee orientation which fosters the district’s vision of excellence
  • Oversees and recommends rewards and recognition initiatives and procedures to foster a positive culture that reduces absenteeism and turnover
  • Stays abreast of overall HR trends to promote wellness and make recommendations to help attract top talent
  • Complete reports, projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Human Resources
  • Supervise and hire Human Resources Assistant(s) and other support staff
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned



  • Bachelors in Human Resources, Business, Finance, or related field 
  • Experience in total rewards or compensation and benefits
  • Experience leading teams
  • Excellent communication skills – oral, written, presentation and strong customer/client focus
  • Demonstrates strong ethical conduct, confidentiality and personal credibility to represent the school district
  • Demonstrates ability to utilize sound judgment and formulate appropriate responses to a wide variety of problems and situations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Practical, business-oriented approach to problem solving, and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with MS Suite


COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:  Maintains communication with school personnel, and the community to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations relevant to personnel processes. Ability to write reports, correspondence and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  261 days (year round)


SALARY:  Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule




REPORT TO:  Director of Human Resources


EVALUATION:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy.
