Tishman Hotel Corporation is hiring a Human Resources Manager to join our team for the Fall 2018 opening of the Aloft Mag Mile, an 18-story limited service hotel with 330+ guestrooms located in the Streeterville neighborhood of Downtown Chicago.

As part of an opening team charged with setting the hotel up for a successful 2018 open, this position will be involved in all aspects of pre-hotel opening planning, as well as recruitment, training, development of company policies and procedure, and employee benefits plans. 

As the hotel’s HR Manager you will manage the day to day operations of the Human Resources department including administration of Human Resources functions and programs including but not limited to, employment practices, recruitment, compensation, benefits, training, employee relations, risk management and policy development and interpretation, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and operating procedures.  In executing these responsibilities the HR Manager will deliver HR services that meets or exceeds the needs of employees while fostering a safe, friendly and fair work environment for all employees.

This position reports directly to the Hotel General Manager, with an indirect reporting relationship to Tishman’s Corporate EVP of Human Resources (located in NYC), and will serve as member of the hotel’s Executive Committee working closely with all Executive Team members in supporting and achieving the hotels goals and objectives.

Fundamental Responsibilities

Recruitment and Hiring

  • Develop, direct and oversee all hotel recruitment and hiring policies and processes for all exempt and non-exempt positions to maintain staffing levels with qualified individuals while complying with federal, state and local laws and regulations. Participate in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of candidates for all positions.

  • Work with department heads to anticipate and plan for staffing needs within related budgets; Educate and counsel department heads and hiring managers on candidate identification, selection, and interview process.

  • Manage new hire process, including scheduling interviews, pre-employment screening process, and complete new hire processing paperwork and on-boarding requirements with new hires.

  • Prepare and execute new hire orientation program to generate a positive first impression for employees, and to ensure employees receive appropriate new hire training to successfully perform their job.

Training, Employee Development and Recognition

  • Implement, administer and coordinate training programs including staff skills training, supervisory/ management development programs; and training to limit hotel liability, including anti-harassment and anti-discrimination training for all employees.

  • Continually assess employee training needs and training deployment methods, making recommendations to the management team for improvement. Work with management team to ensure employees are cross-trained to support successful daily operations.

  • Maintain effective employee communication channels in the property by developing daily communication methods, and assisting with regularly scheduled property-wide meetings.

  • Direct administration of performance appraisals for all employees. 

  • Develop and manage employee reward and recognition programs, and activities to include, but not limited to, picnics, holiday functions, health fairs, award banquets and special events.

Employee Relations

  • Develop, implement and administer hotel employee handbook, policies, and programs related to the management of all hotel personnel to ensure the maintenance of a positive, productive, fair and consistent employment environment.

  • Communicate hotel personnel-related policies and procedures to all employees, and educate managers/supervisors in the application and consistent enforcement of personnel-related policies and procedures.

  • Provide assistance, guidance and counseling to Executive team, management, and staff on employee relations issues, listening and interpreting concerns and objectives, and seeking solutions to resolve problems or concerns.

  • Communicate performance expectations in accordance with job descriptions for each position.Provide direction, and assistance with coaching and counseling, and determination of appropriate disciplinary action; Review all discipline documentation for accuracy and consistency, and checks for supportive documentation.

  • Utilize an “open door” policy to facilitate open employee communications to discern and address employee problems and/or concerns in a timely manner.

  • Oversee and investigate all employee relations, labor-related matters related to federal, state and local employment and civil rights laws, workers compensation laws, and workplace issues in a fair and non-judgmental manner to discover facts, identify potential liability, and facilitate resolution; Partners with Loss Prevention to conduct employee accident investigations, as necessary.

  • Conduct exit interviews and examine all exit interviews for trends, implement various employee relations programs to limits turnover.

  • Consult regularly with Corporate EVP of Human Resources regarding serious matters or escalating issues.

Compensation and Benefits

  • With Corporate guidance, assist in the development of the design and implementation of employee health and welfare benefit plans consistent with the company's strategic direction.

  • On annual basis, manage the benefits renewal and open enrollment process; participate in benefit surveys of the local market, propose modifications and/or enhancements of the hotels benefit plans for management team approval.

  • On an ongoing basis, Implement, communicate and administer the employee benefits programs, assist with completion of enrollment forms, and answer questions, and administer billing.

  • Participate in wage/salary surveys to provide and analysis and recommendation for salary and wage scale ranges.  Administer the annual compensation review process consistent with the company's strategic direction, and maintain compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations;

  • Coordinate, support and administer all other benefit and compensation plans, including the incentive process, benefit enrollment and communications, etc.

  • Answer questions on payroll and benefits, and liaise with Payroll on behalf of team members on such matters as benefits enrollment/changes, payroll discrepancies, etc. 

  • Oversee function of the HR management system to include, but not limited to, entry of team member data, recording employment transitions (i.e. hire, separation, leaves of absence, etc.).

Legal and Compliance

  • Maintain hotel’s human resources information system, and employee personnel files, and ensure files are complete and contain required employment paperwork, proper performance management and compensation documentation, are properly maintained and secured for the required length of time in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws.

  • Ensure compliance with procedure for accessing, reviewing, and auditing employee files

  • Monitor hotel’s compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws.

  • With Corporate EVP and local counsel, oversee all employee relations and labor-related matters as they relate to federal, state and local employment and civil rights laws; may be required to respond to and attend any related hearing for all employee claims against the hotel including EEOC, NLRB, Workers Compensation, Unemployment and Wage & Hour.

  • Manages Workers Compensation claims to ensure appropriate employee care and manage costs.

  • Manage Unemployment Claims, respond to unemployment claims ensures property is properly represented, as needed.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Hospitality Management, or Human Resources or a related field

  • 3 years' of related experience, in the hospitality industry 

  • Professional HR designation (PHR, SPHR or other), a plus.

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of HR laws and practices.

  • Ability to observe employees in the workplace, analyze operations and detect situations of concern with regard to areas such as employee performance, grooming, training, policy adherence, and morale.

  • Highly organized with the ability to plan multiple activities and meet deadlines with the ability to maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively exchange ideas, information and opinions with others to formulate programs and arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions and solutions

  • A commitment to confidentiality and building trusting relationships with employee at all levels.

  • Problem solver with strong leadership qualities

  • Excellent knowledge of all hotel operations departments

  • Ability to effectively present information to upper management. 

  • Willingness to participate in M.O.D. coverage as required.
