The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) invites human resources (HR) professionals who are excited about making a different in employees' and students' lives to apply for the HR Generalist position (R0071) at our System Office in Midlothian, VA. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, this position will assist on a variety of needs, including creating a great employee experience, training and development support, compensation and classification analysis, and talent management support. As we continue to improve and deliver expanded services to our employees, this position will have an opportunity to help move the HR function to the next level, including participating in several projects.

 

Duties include:

  • Assist with training and development efforts by creating training presentations and documentation and conducting training sessions as needed
  • Serve as Virginia Learning System administrator
  • Coordinate and/or assist with employee experience and engagement efforts, such as onboarding, recognition and professional development events, communications, and vendor services coordination
  • Assist in creating engaging communication pieces and maintaining HR content in the intranet and internet sites
  • Assist with coordinating internal and outside resources to present on topics or at events
  • Conduct classification reviews and compensation analysis and complete surveys
  • Enter data and generate reports using the various HR systems, analyze data and provide informational summaries, and audit information to ensure training records are complete
  • Assist with System Office customer service and backup support
  • Assist with talent management and recruitment processes
  • Participate in projects designed to improve services to our employees, students, and stakeholders
  • Participate in professional development and growth opportunities for the position to ensure incumbent maintains current with human resources and business knowledge, including researching best practices

 

Qualifications

To be successful in this position, applicants must have:

  • A bachelor degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field, or equivalent combination or education/training and experience that will allow employee to adequately perform the functions of the job
  • Experience creating communication pieces or publication production, or documenting information
  • Experience working in a training capacity or administering training
  • Experience performing position classification and compensation analysis
  • Experience delivering presentations or training
  • Knowledge of general human resources functions, including federal and state laws and regulations
  • Excellent customer service skills and friendly and professional demeanor
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Proficiency in computer software programs - Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to analyze, organize, and format data and generate reports
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to travel to in-state meetings and trainings and out-of-state professional development activities
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible and to grow professionally through development and training activities
  • Willingness and flexibility to cross train and assist with various projects and needs as they arise
  • Willingness and ability to demonstrate ethical behavior and support VCCS values and mission.

 

Preferred consideration will be given to those who have:

  • Experience working with the Virginia Learning System or other training systems
  • Experience working to maintain intranet or internet content or knowledge of web development/ design and various types of media sources
  • Ability to work with graphic design or creating impactful communication pieces and presentations
  • Graduate work in human resources, business administration or other relevant area or willingness to pursue advanced training
  • Experience using industry standard software tools (Adobe Creative Cloud, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign).
  • Experience working with an enterprise information system, such as PeopleSoft, Banner, or Workday
  • Professional Human Resources certification, such as PHR, SPHR, or SHRM-CP
  • Experience working in a higher education environment
  • Process improvement or refinement experience
  • PeopleSoft experience
