Human Resources Director

Mud Bay
Olympia, Washington 98501

Mud Bay is looking for an open-hearted, open-minded, strategic and ambitious Human Resources Director.

What is Mud Bay?

Mud Bay began in 1988 when Elsa Wulff bought a struggling farm store located on a hill above Mud Bay, the southernmost reach of Puget Sound, just outside of Olympia, Washington. Joined soon after by her son and daughter, the Wulffs and their coworkers evolved Mud Bay into one of the pioneer retailers of natural foods for cats and dogs. More than thirty years later, Mud Bay is an employee-owned company of nearly 60 locations and 500 staff with an annual growth rate of 15% to 20%. But for all our growth, neither our mission nor our values have changed. We’re still all about contributing to the health of dogs and cats and the happiness of their owners. We’re still about empowering dog and cat owners with natural products and accurate information. And we still all about building a strong company that we can all be proud of.

As a key leader on Mud Bay’s People Team, the Human Resources Director will have a breadth of responsibilities including strategy planning and implementation, department growth and development, one-to-one mentoring and coaching, and daily administration support of Mud Bay’s HR programs and practices.

Mud Bay’s desired outcomes for the HR Director include:

  • LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT. Leadership and counsel are approached with a teach, not tell mindset. Leads Mud Bay and others through change. Every team member understands their areas for development and feels personally invested in.
  • EMPLOYMENT MATTERS. The voices of Muddies are listened to. Employment matters are understood and approached through the lenses of Mud Bay's culture and values, risk to Muddies and overall risk to Mud Bay. Legal and government matters are promptly managed and escalated when necessary. Documentation is thorough and confidentiality is maintained.
  • STRATEGIC PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION: Vision for and structure of the HR department is clear. Short-term and long-term HR plans are defined and align with Mud Bay's mission, values and growth. Supporting budgets are maintained.
  • COMPENSATION & BENEFITS. Strategies and supporting philosophies around Mud Bay's benefits (e.g., compensation, medical benefits, PTO, perks, leave, insurance, EAP) align with Mud Bay's business needs and continued growth. They are also clear, current, fairly administered, consistently followed and when necessary, evolve.
  • HUMAN RESOURCES. Human Resources is viewed as warm, credible, resourceful, valuable, well-organized and responsive by our colleagues and external partners. Internal practices and roles are clear and consistently followed. Mud Bay is in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations. Any risks are understood, and mitigation plans are identified.
  • RECRUITING. We care for our candidates as we would our customers. Recruiting is viewed as warm, credible, resourceful, valuable, well-organized and responsive by our colleagues and candidates. Our employment brand story and sourcing strategies are developed in partnership with Marketing and Community Outreach. Team is current on related trends and continuously looks to improve Mud Bay's practices.
  • DATA, ASSESSMENT & REPORTING. Every team member takes ownership for their area's data, both big and small. The team uses data to inform insights, recommendations and decisions. Reports are relevant, timely and accurate.
  • SYSTEMS & DOCUMENTATION. Supporting systems and technologies meet the needs of Mud Bay. Documentation is current, relevant and reflects Mud Bay's culture and values.
  • PROGRAM & PROJECT MANAGEMENT. Successfully leads and participates in programs and projects as identified or assigned. Facilitates alignment across a variety of stakeholder interests.
