Chapman and Cutler LLP is seeking a motivated Human Resources Assistant to join the Chicago office.  The Human Resources Assistant will help coordinate all processes and initiatives involved in Human Resources, including new hire orientation and the support of new staff as directed by the Director of Human Resources.


Candidates must be able to interact with attorneys and staff in a professional and approachable manner.  Having a strong client service attitude will be highly advantageous.  The successful candidate will thrive on working in a fast-paced team environment.

The day-to-day responsibilities of the Human Resources Assistant will include:


  • Provides support in various day-to-day operations of the Human Resources department, including assisting in the coordination of various office functions, employee relations, and processing of personnel changes
  • Assists with communications and logistics for annual and 90-day staff performance evaluations
  • Maintains administrative files as well as files containing frequently used forms and documents
  • Assists in coordinating the new hire background check process for all new hires
  • Creating all new staff and attorney files and assembling information packets for various Human Resources/Benefits/Payroll initiatives
  • Assists with Human Resources communications and content (e.g., weekly bulletin, Firm intranet, staff trainings, policies and handbooks)
  • Works with the Benefits Coordinator to update and distribute all open enrollment communications and other related materials
  • Assists in coordinating events and logistics for Firm benefits/wellness initiatives such as biometric screenings, annual flu shots, etc.
  • Assists in handling all HRIS data entry related to the onboarding and processing of new hire information
  • Assists the Director of Human Resources with various responsibilities, including but not limited to: maintaining and updating Human Resources records and databases, handling compliance items and performing file audits to ensure that all required employee documentation is collected, processing employee requests regarding Human Resources issues, rules and regulations
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including providing back-up coverage for other Human Resources positions when needed




Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree (preferred) or an Associate’s degree plus additional Human Resources experience.  The ideal candidate will have one (1) to three (3) years of prior experience in a professional environment; preference given to those with prior law firm experience.  A proficiency working with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.


  • Must be an excellent communicator, including the desire to ask questions and learn from coworkers
  • Superior organizational and proofreading skills; detail oriented
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to draw conclusions from data, assess implications and make recommendations
  • Work well under pressure and be an excellent problem-solver
  • Committed to client service; professional demeanor and discretion required
  • Must have the ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Available to work outside of normal schedule hours (extra hours during open enrollment, etc.)
