Human Resources Advisor - Employee Relations Specialist

McGuireWoods has an exciting opportunity for an Employee Relations Specialist in our Los Angeles (Century City) location supporting our offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston and Austin.  You will be part of a dynamic Human Resources team and will use your coaching, performance management, and employment law experience supporting our firm employees to reach their full potential delivering excellence for our clients. 


  • Responsible for partnering and building effective relationships in our California and Texas offices to ensure open communications with employees and management
  • Ensures employees understand policies and procedures and are aware of all firm resources available to them. Provide advice and guidance on a range of policies and HR issues to support understanding and ensure effective communication of HR practices
  • Guide managers through employee relations cases in real time, intervening and steering in the appropriate direction taking account of governing policies, employment law, best practice and precedent 
  • Support managers with the effective and efficient performance of their employees, identifying and facilitating appropriate interventions through the performance management processes 
  • Keeps up to date with developments in employment legislation and human resources best practice, knowledge sharing with the team to ensure continuous improvement in the service offered 
  • Investigates complaints and grievances related to harassment and allegations of discrimination 
  • Ensure compliance with established internal HR policies and procedures and regulatory requirements such as EEO, ADA, FMLA, FLSA etc. and conduct periodic audits, as needed/required 


  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, Psychology or other related field and 4 to 8 years progressive human resource management experience
  • Knowledge of the principles of human resources administration and general human resources concepts to include recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, benefits administration, training, local, state and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of human behavior/performance, individual differences in ability, personality and interests and learning/motivation
  • Ability to balance the best interest of employees with the best interest of the firm
  • Ability to handle confidential information with sensitivity is mandatory
  • Excellent written communication skills and coaching/counseling skills
  • Ability to travel (25%) to other office locations as needed
