You’ll work with professionals across the HR team to support the whole scope of our programs and services.  At the same time, you’ll be the face of HR for many of our employees – ensuring that they experience our professional, compassionate, and responsive commitment to customer service. 

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

 

  • Facilitate Employee Needs.  You’ll act as first point of contact for staff regarding any human resources related questions and concerns and, in many cases, you’ll also be the one who provides answers/solutions.  In complex situations, you’ll escalate things to appropriate subject matter experts as needed. You’ll also handle intake for employee relations issues like inappropriate behavior, unfair treatment, or violations of other policies.
  • Support the Scope of HR Programs.  You’ll be substantively involved in working with various human resources functional teams on departmental activities and initiatives such as performance management, survey participation, open enrollment, investigations, and/or training classes.  You’ll also be responsible for special projects and assignments such as conducting research and analysis related to best practices and other relevant market data and information, and where relevant, providing presentations related to that work.
  • Communicate HR Information.  You’ll help prepare and disseminate HR information and messages through the departmental intranet page, our departmental email account, and other communication methods. 
  • Administrative Support.  You’ll work closely with the head of the HR Department to provide necessary administrative support on their work and projects and to ensure that they and the department have what they need to be maximally effective.  

Requirements

 

You are passionate about working in the Human Resources field and are able to articulate why you care about this work, day-in and day-out.  You have demonstrated an ability to cultivate trust, to handle difficult and sensitive situations, to stay calm in stressful situations, and to be responsive to a range of personalities and interactive styles.  You also have experience juggling a range of responsibilities, working on tight timelines, and executing with a high level of attention to detail.  You communicate clearly and concisely and are adept at communicating in a range of formats and settings (e.g. whether communicating in person or remotely, verbally or in writing, etc.).  You have a bachelor’s degree – ideally in Human Resources, Business Administration, or other related field or equivalent work experience.  You have successfully completed your SHRM/PHR certification.

 

The candidates will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the HR/generalist field and will have some knowledge related to things like benefits, compensation, employee relations, training, and/or people development and the best practices and laws that apply.  Prefer candidates who have worked in or volunteered for a mission-driven organization in the past.   Must be able to cultivate and demonstrate good judgment and team-working skills, knowing what to handle themselves and what will be better handled in a team capacity.

It is unlikely that there will be travel associated with this position.  You’ll do a lot of talking and listening in this role, including with individuals who are calling you on phone from remote locations, and will need to be able to prepare and maintain written records and keep databases up to date.  You should know that the environment in the Gaithersburg office is moderately quiet.  The HSUS will make reasonable accommodations to support individuals with disabilities.

 

Finally, you won’t have any supervisory responsibilities in this role, but you will be required to work well in teams and to interact with supervisors and individuals who hold senior positions in the organization.
