Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional theater actors and stage managers in the United States, is hiring a HR Manager in its Los Angeles office.  Actors’ Equity is a national union affiliated with the AFL-CIO, with 51,000 members – and growing.    The HR Manager will lead operational and analytical activities such as employee relations, employee engagement, performance management, talent acquisition, onboarding, change management, leadership development, diversity and reporting. The National HR Director will lead you directly and you will partner with other HR staff to ensure the contributions are of maximum value, effective and sustainable.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Serve as regional first contact for questions regarding the full spectrum of employee lifecycle activities including recruiting, onboarding, training, benefits, pay review, termination and off-boarding
  • Protects the interest of employees and the Association in accordance with company policies, governmental laws and regulations.
  • Track and manage all data maintained in a Human Resource Information System (HRIS), currently ADP
  • Coordinate the overall administration of staff collective bargaining agreements and employee handbook
  • Serve as Western Region Staff Development liaison including coordination of staff orientations, training programs and service award programs
  • Leads hiring managers through the talent management and acquisition process, performance management process, annual budget process and seeks to maintain an appropriate level of employee engagement within the Association
  • Provides effective coaching and counseling to management team to resolve employee relations issues, while understanding the root cause of the issue
  • Fosters a culture of diversity an inclusion across the office
  • Assess employee needs on an ongoing basis and communicate desired outcomes, which result in improved performance and depth of talent
  • Assist in negotiating staff collective bargaining agreements
  • Confer with and advise regional management to align each employee’s job duties to key organizational goals
  • Coordinate and guide the annual performance appraisal process
  • Provide general operational oversight for all Western Region Departments and coordinate additional duty assignments and special projects as needed
  • Complete accounts payable entry, billing conflict resolution, regular banking deposits, petty cash management, employee re-imbursements, and coordinate monthly expense reporting guidelines as established by the Comptroller
  • Assist with the preparation of payroll
  • Champion a positive and engaged office culture by coordinating staff appreciation events, holiday parties and seeking opportunities to support the organization’s unique culture while promoting labor values
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities:

  • BA or equivalent degree required, preferably in Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field, required
  • At least 7 years progressive human resources experience required
  • Demonstrated history of quickly building relationships, gaining credibility, and partnering with leaders and peers
  • Strong understanding of all functional HR disciplines with specific strength in organization and/or leadership development
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills. Has the ability to relate to individuals from diverse backgrounds and all levels in the organization
  • Experience working work Director and Senior level leaders/managers
  • Skilled in managing employee relations, compensation, talent acquisition, organization effectiveness, organizational development, and performance management across various departments, while managing with labor values
  • Team player with a desire to succeed
  • Supervision and management experience
  • Detail-oriented and able to handle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs required
  • Prior experience with HRIS (ADP Preferred)
  • Prior experience with Accounting software (Great Plains Preferred)
  • Proactive problem-solving attitude a plus
  • Commitment to confidentiality, discretion, and integrity
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local labor and employment laws (Act, ADA, FMLA, ADEA, FLSA, and EEO regulations)



  • Starting salary: $70,000/year
