Position Summary

The HR Generalist enables Cornell University Veterinary Specialists (CUVS) to deliver exceptional medicine and service through the development and effective implementation of progressive people practices that attract and engage exceptional talent. Our team of veterinary specialists, licensed technicians and support staff are among the most respected in their field, and our people practices are designed to support an innovative and collaborative workforce that enables everyone to perform at their best. As the ambassador for our culture, the HR Generalist is responsible for full-cycle human resources administration and operations and is a catalyst for driving employee engagement. Utilizing best-in-class HR practices, the HR Generalist will positively impact our productivity and our people, and will ensure our team members experience the best that CUVS has to offer.


We’re looking for a motivated and enthusiastic people connector: someone who thrives on helping others and is passionate about making CUVS the best workplace possible. The HR Generalist must be capable of learning about the business, being present in all areas of the hospital to observe, inquire and understand the world in which we operate to design and implement employee programs that enable all employees to deliver on our mission. The HR Generalist will lead HR functions, from talent acquisition and onboarding to employee relations and benefits administration, and everything in between. S/he will be instrumental in the design and implementation of a new HRIS, a revamped Onboarding program and a refreshed performance management process.

Key Responsibilities and Functions

 This position carries responsibilities in the following functional areas:

Talent Acquisition

  • Oversee recruitment and selection activities; actively execute a robust talent acquisition philosophy that attracts highly talented candidates.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with external sources to increase visibility and enrich talent pipeline
  • Work with hiring managers to provide guidance, and to participate, in recruiting and hiring practices
  • Effectively utilize Applicant Tracking tool for recruitment activities.
  • Maintain high standards for recruitment metrics and minimizes vacancy periods


  • Strengthen and maintain orientation and onboarding programs to emphasize the importance of welcoming and integrating new employees into the CUVS culture.
  • Lead pre-hire and Day 1 activities; collaborate with hiring managers for onboarding plans for new hires to ensure early success
  • Is a resource for new hires during their onboarding period.
  • Effectively analyzes data to recommend improvements and enhancements to onboarding processes
  • Is the face of CUVS, representing our culture and demonstrating behaviors that welcome new hires and build rapport from the start of the employer-employee relationship.
  • Effectively manages the employee offboarding process, analyzing turnover to detect trends and ensuring proper termination of the employee relationship. Conduct exit interviews to assess and gain feedback.

Employee Relations

  • Provide HR support and consultation to the business, answering employee and manager questions regarding HR programs, policies, and other HR-related items.
  • Advise on performance management issues; lead investigation and resolution of issues.
  • Administer related programs (Worker’s Comp, FMLA, STD, etc) as it pertains to employment issues.
  • Manage and track all employee disciplinary actions.
  • Liaise with legal counsel as appropriate.

Benefits Administration

  • Administer all employee benefit programs and act as a liaison between benefit brokers, CUVS and employees.
  • Organize and manage annual open enrollment communications and election process.
  • Process requests for enrollment, cancellation or changes.
  • Manage time off programs.
  • Actively participate in the design, implementation and management of employee appreciation programs.

Performance Management

  • Partner with Management on staffing and growth plans to understand organizational performance standards.
  • Oversee the ongoing performance management process; ensure timely delivery of organization commitment for performance discussions and activities.
  • Understand and help to cultivate an internal pipeline of talent; participate in career development and succession planning activities.

Policy Administration

  • Continually assess the competitiveness of all programs and practices; seek feedback, analyze results and research trends and developments .
  • Identify opportunities to improve HR policies, identify and propose solutions to correct inconsistent HR policies and gaps; roll out programs and initiatives to evolve HR practices.
  • Prepare and maintain regular updates of the Employee Handbook .
  • Maintain knowledge of global and local HR policies, programs, laws and issues, through regular webinars, seminars and other learning opportunities.

HR/HRIS Administration

  • Maintain electronic employee personnel files, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including EEO, FLSA, ERISA, ADA, FMLA, Workers Comp and OSHA as well as legal requirements as they relate to payroll, benefits and administrative policy compliance.
  • Understand, produce and analyze data, reports and metrics relevant for continuous improvement of people practices.
  • Serve as an administrator for HRIS tool

Education and Experience


  • 5-7+ years of experience of HR Generalist experience, preferably within the healthcare industry
  • Necessary proficiency, knowledge, and experience in all HR processes
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, HR systems


  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential.


Flexible schedule, approximately 40 hours per week, including weekdays, some evening hours, and one Saturday per month. Set schedule to be determined.
