This is an Executive level position and a key member of our Lead Management team. This role will be responsible for our people and their overall employee experience by enhancing a culture that embodies Heath’s values and overall mission. This position will oversee all traditional Human Resources operational functions including learning and development initiatives and programs.

We have a very diverse workplace of 240+ employees that encompasses manufacturing, shipping, retail, design, communications, digital, and administrative functions. Our original dinnerware factory and showroom is in Sausalito, we manufacture tile along with a showroom and clay studio in the SF Mission with a shipping and warehouse location down the street, a store in the SF Ferry Building, and a showroom and clay studio in Los Angeles. Role Summary

An integral member of the lead management team, the Head of People + Culture partners with all areas of Heath to guide policies, objectives, programs, and initiatives, all in support of our vision, mission and values. This position leads the People team, driving supportive relationships with all employee groups and guiding informed policies which empower managers to be better leaders. The Head of People + Culture provides hands on leadership, coaching and mentoring, is comfortable challenging convention, and asks great questions. This position leads our learning and culture efforts to provide robust on-boarding and learning and development tools. 


Essential Role Functions

This position has responsibility over leading efforts around building a great Employee Experience and maintaining solid Operations, including: 



_ Passionately lead the employee experience, culture and organizational development for the company

_ Make Heath a great place to work with an established culture around our Mission, Vision, and Values

_ Build an engaged culture around Employee Ownership

_ Engage as an integral part of our visioning process

_ Offer thought leadership to Lead Team around organizational structure and development

_ Lead the People team as an outstanding example of internal customer service and solid operations

_ Provide support, leadership, coaching, mentorship, and development for the People team


Organizational Development and Performance Management

_ Build a strong program of individual and organizational learning and development, identifying and developing training and learning opportunities throughout the business

_ Continuously evolve tools and structured processes to drive meaningful performance conversations and employee development for all employee groups


Setting People up for Success

_ Evolving and maintaining a consistent on-boarding process for new hires, teaching the skills and behaviors needed to become a successful member of the organization

_ Working with teams to establish working synergy within and between teams

_ Creating the tools and experiences that keep all employees aligned and in touch with the company vision

_Deliver and facilitate exciting training programs and content to help employees in their daily jobs, create career development pathways to attract and grow talent, and drive a culture of excellence in leadership 


Organizational Services and Support

_ Build a strong business relationship with the internal customer: lead team, managers, and staff

_ Long term planning for the needs of a larger and growing organization, including establishing structures for scale and related future planning

_ Promote employee empowerment through user friendly and professional communication tools

_ Maintain consistent People representation in all locations for all employee groups

_ Maintain consistency in the handling of employee issues and concerns, looking to achieve the best balance for the company and the employee


Human Resources Operations

_ Lead and manage a high performing team of Human Resources professionals to ensure the day-to-day HR operations provide an outstanding level of support for Heath’s employees throughout the entire life-cycle (talent acquisition, on-boarding, benefits/ESOP, HR compliance, payroll and reporting, performance management, compensation programs, learning and development initiatives, employee relations and HRIS management)

_Oversee the relationship with union representatives including contract negotiations and ensure compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreement

_Continue to proactively build the Heath workplace “Brand” as a great place to work

_Market and educate employees on Heath’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (“ESOP”) and benefit offerings

_Oversee the annual benefits review process and compensation/performance management programs and systems


What We’re Looking For 

An individual that is passionate about great culture. Requires a track record of success in recruiting, compensation, benefits, performance management, policies and compliance. Has held a People Operations leadership position at a company of 200+ people with multiple locations. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals with a wide creative latitude. Has a strong appreciation for design and company culture.

_ Bachelor’s degree

_ 15+ years of experience in all aspects of human resources operations

_ Grounded in theory of relevant disciplines of organizational learning and development, talent management, change management and organization design and transformation 

_Effective coach with a reputation for delivering constructive feedback in a way which leads to the successful development of people and high performing teams in alignment with Heath’s values and mission 

_ At least eight years as a leader of the function in a similar sized company with a track record of success

_ Incredible eye for detail and an exceptionally high bar for quality

_ Build strong relationships and can expertly navigate through stakeholder discussions to successful outcomes

_ As a skilled communicator, you have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and employees and speak effectively in front of groups. You are driven by empathy, eternal optimism, an extrovert, a leader, and has a desire to make organizations their best 

_ Excellent organizational and project management skills, specifically, the ability to raise issues in a timely manner, meet deadlines and pay attention to detail 

_ Experience working with a broad range of employees, from hourly employees with minimal job experience to salaried employees with specialized skill areas

_ PHR or HR certifications a plus

_ Prior industry experience in retail, design/creative and manufacturing preferred. (Union experience and Employee ownership a plus). 

_ Extensive knowledge of state and federal employment law

_ Systems and tech savvy; is a systems thinker

_ Excellent spreadsheet skills; familiarity with Google Docs, ADP, Jazz a plus


Position Details 

_ Location: Heath San Francisco, Mission district. Oversight of three Bay Area locations and one Los Angeles location.

_ Reports to: Managing Director

_ Direct Reports: Two Human Resources Generalists

_ Key relationships: Lead Team, Finance Team, Department Managers

_ Schedule and hours: full-time, Monday-Friday, approximately 40 hours per week
