Position Summary

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for the development, administration, coordination, and evaluation of the university’s human resources functions, including payroll.

This is a full generalist position encompassing all areas of Human Resources including employment, development, assessment, engagement, benefits, retirement plan administration, recruiting, retention and all employment activities.  You will also update and council leaders on enforcing policies and procedures.  This position is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HR leader to maintain and further develop the HR department and to contribute to transforming the lives of students.

  • Partnering with administration, faculty and staff to implement the university mission and objectives, you will provide guidance and expertise in the day-to-day operations related to all areas of human resources.
  • While focusing on developing collaborative relationships you will become a trusted advisor and valued administrative partner where you will take initiative to identify and anticipate university needs as well as consult on the development of current, annual and long-term objectives; effectively interface with leaders; communicate university policies and procedures; and influence decisions in support of university objectives.
  • You will possess exceptional judgment with the ability to influence and persuade; have experience in resolving complex employee relations matters with excellent analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to articulate and write in a clear and concise fashion; an engaging and proactive management style; and a positive collaborative attitude.
  • Directs, trains and supervises the staff of the Human Resources Department. Develops and manages plans, priorities, goals and budgets.
  • Develops and implements HR systems, policies, and procedures that promote an effective workplace and facilitate compliance with applicable laws.
  • Ensures compliance with all state and federal legislation pertaining to HR matters and remains current with industry trends.
  • Participates on committees as deemed appropriate and serves as the Title IX Coordinator for staff.
  • Assists supervisors in carrying out their personnel responsibilities.
  • Participates in the development and administration of a comprehensive wage and salary program.
  • Conducts workplace investigations and exit interviews.
  • Directs benefits contracting, administration, communication including open enrollment, problems solving including the TIAA retirement plan.




  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Organizational Development or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years’ of increasingly responsible supervisory experience in human resources.
  • Thorough knowledge and ability to effectively apply federal and state employment laws and regulations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of California and Federal wage and hour laws.
  • Superior organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment, with minimal supervision, and with others from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of integrity and ethics and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Commitment to continuous professional growth and development within human resources.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel and HRIS software as well as the ability to learn new technology.
  • Valid California driver’s license, clean driving record and dependable transportation.


  • Prior Human Resource Management experience in a University setting.
  • Master’s Degree in, Business, Organizational Development, or its equivalent.
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification.
  • Experience related to multiculturalism and/or issues of campus diversity.
  • Experience with Ellucian Colleague Human Resources and Payroll software.

Environmental Conditions

  • Indoors in normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes at least ninety percent (90%) of the time.
  • Frequent computer use at workstation, up to eight hours per day.
  • Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
  • Public contact position requiring business-like apparel.

Physical Demands

  • Perform the following, with or without reasonable accommodation: stand, sit, kneel, stoop, reach, lift, grasp, finger, see (near and far) for reading and data analysis on a computer screen, hear and talk for ordinary conversation and telephone calls.
  • Perform analytical and cognitive thinking and decision making. 
  • Approximately 80% of this position’s duties require use of a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Travel alone between campuses.


Pay is based upon qualifications and experience.
