The newly-created position of Executive Director of Career Development and Experiential Learning integrates career development and experiential learning with the goal of ensuring that Illinois College students Graduate READY and are well prepared to articulate the professional abilities and skills they have acquired through their curricular and co-curricular experiences. The position oversees the Center for Career Readiness which supports the professional development of students through a range of activities and opportunities. Five full-time staff members report to the Executive Director, including two career development professionals, the coordinator of community-based learning, the director of global education and undergraduate research, and an administrate assistant.   

The Executive Director will be responsible for both on-campus and external initiatives, with approximately one-third time off campus developing relationships with prospective employers and otherwise cultivating career-development opportunities for IC students. On campus this individual will coordinate with faculty departments and multiple campus offices to develop opportunities for professional and career development, including graduate and professional school readiness and support for students to present strong applications for graduate work. S/he will oversee, organize, and deliver programming and/or coursework toward these ends. The initiatives for the Center for Career Readiness include: structuring connections between intercultural and international experiences and career development; promoting leadership and career development programming in partnership with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Athletics, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Office of Student Life and Development, and other campus offices; collaborating with faculty and academic departments on discipline-specific professional and graduate-school development efforts such as targeted internships, undergraduate research, and campus visits from working professionals in the fields; and continuing ongoing work to emphasize the career development elements of on-campus employment, to structure and encourage internships, to provide excellent career development programming, to develop a robust co-curricular transcript, and to provide support to all students in the career development and exploration process. 

Essential functions:

  • Provide leadership and support to Center staff in providing opportunities for students to gain real-world knowledge and experience leading to career and graduate-school readiness through such activities as internships, on-campus employment, undergraduate research, and community-based learning.
  • Promote Illinois College through outreach to potential employers in the local region and beyond.  These include corporations, non-profit organizations, and governmental organizations.  Particular emphasis on organizations with an existing connection to the College (e.g. an employer of alumni).
  • Inform and educate the College community about important career trends locally, regionally, and nationally; thorough knowledge of workforce trends essential.
  • Ensure that the work of the Center is widely publicized on and off campus among all constituencies – current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and prospective employers –  through traditional and social media.
  • Understand and effectively utilize appropriate technology to support career development activities.
  • Develop programming to prepare Illinois College students to be competitive in the job market and for graduate/professional school.
  • Promote Illinois College as a superior provider of talent to local and regional organizations.
  • Secure resources for the work of the Center.
  • Supervise Center personnel and coordinate efforts with other campus offices in support of the Center’s mission.
  • Strategically manage the budget.
  • Assess and evaluate the work of the Center to ensure effective delivery of service and positive outcomes.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree in human resources, student personnel, business administration, or related field.  
  • Minimum of ten years relevant, progressively-responsible professional experience, with at least five in career/workforce development or career services in a collegiate environment. 
  • Evidence of effective supervisory and organizational leadership experience. 
  • Evidence of successful public relations or other organizational promotional activities. 
  • Knowledge and Skills
  • Broad understanding of principles of career development, career counseling, job search strategies, market trends, employer relations, and recruitment practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of current career trends and opportunities.
  • Strong networking and public relations skills.
  • A comfortable public presence. 
  • Intercultural competence and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use and evaluate software.
  • Creativity and vision for program development in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Knowledge of student development and passion for working with college students.
  • Professionalism and the ability to impart professional values to career-seekers.
  • Strong budget management skills and ability to use resources strategically.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with many offices and programs across campus, including: academic departments and faculty; Admissions; Development and Alumni Relations; Marketing; Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Athletics, and others. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive professional contacts in the state of Illinois.
  • Experience both within and outside higher education.
