General Summary

The Employee Relations Specialist performs a variety of duties to promote employee engagement and retention, such as resolving human relations problems and promoting employee health and well-being.  They interview workers and discuss personnel, human relations, and work-related problems that adversely affect morale, health, and productivity. This person also evaluates and resolves human relations, work-related problems, and meets with management to determine appropriate action(s).  An Employee Relations Specialist explains and provides advice to workers about company and rules, regulations, and procedures, and need for compliance. A successful Employee Relations Specialist will have the ability to exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills, researching, collecting, and analyzing employee data skills, while organizing and updating employee files. The incumbent will need to have extensive knowledge of employment law and adhere to company and industry regulations at all times.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Counsels employees regarding work, family, or personal problems
  • Schedules and manages all employee drug screening programs except for local prehire instant drug screens.
  • Prepares reports to communicate employee concerns and comments and organization actions taken.
  • Schedules and manages various project site requirements as it relates to background checks, drug screens and confidential forms that need to completed before an employee can get on the project site.
  • Attends conferences and meetings, as employee-management liaison, to facilitate communication between parties.
  • Develops monitors and communicates policies, programs and procedures related to Employee Relations.
  • Develops and administers progressive discipline policy and procedures and performance management processes.
  • Reviews and approves employee disciplinary actions.
  • Develop and interpret personnel policies consistent with HR Director Directions.
  • Ensure employee handbook reflects current policy.
  • Receives and files disciplinary and performance management documentation and update the HRIS HR module accordingly.
  • Investigates harassment/hostile work environment and other complaints of non-acceptable actions and behaviors.
  • Conducts other investigations as directed by Director of Human Resources.
  • Conducts exit interviews for terminated employees.
  • Provides feedback to HR and departmental management regarding trends revealed in exit interviews and department KPIs.
  • Participates in unemployment claims and legal hearings to provide testimony and monitoring proceedings.
  • Consults and advises management to ensure compliance with legal and administrative requirements.

Requirements

  1. Bachelors Degree required; Masters Degree preferred.
  2. Three to five years progressive Human Resources experience required.
  3. PHR Certification required; SPHR Certification preferred.
  4. Bilingual (Spanish) required
