The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 30 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. To serve those students, the district employs approximately 3,650 staff, including more than 1,600 teachers.

To help our students achieve this goal, the district is implementing a district-wide initiative called Diploma+.


JOB GOAL: The Director of Professional Workforce Development is responsible for managing and supporting the district in securing a well-trained and diverse workforce, in accordance with established guidelines and sound administrative practices exemplifying the organization’s mission, values and goals.



  • Lead the design, development and implementation of programs, policies and strategies tailored to meet the development of certified and classified personnel.
  • Manage Professional Workforce Development strategies and processes.
  • Assess professional workforce development needs of schools and departments, both certified and classified personnel in collaboration with, but not limited to, Director of Curriculum, Instructional Improvement Officers, and Instructional Coach.
  • Design and execute key programmatic elements of the Fellows Program.
  • Design and execute key programmatic elements of the Beginning Teachers programs that lead to a professional license under the rules of the Kansas State Department of Education.
  • Assist with the provision of facilitation and coaching to supervisors, and principals regarding workforce development methods and tools for certified and classified staff.
  • Manage the individual development planning process for emerging leaders.
  • Provide oversight to mentors and beginning teachers.
  • Works with various colleges and the Kansas Department of Education to ensure alternative certification opportunities for staff.
  • Provide specialized training to certified and classified staff as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of required training to ensure the development of the workforce in the educational setting.
  • Lead the work around the Marzano Growth and Evaluation Tool for both certified and classified staff.
  • Prepare budgetary recommendations that meet departmental goals and provide for effective management of resources.
  • Supervise a group of personnel, each performing similar and/or interrelated tasks and activities.
  • Collaborate with Human Resource Directors on Professional Development needed for classified staff.
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.




Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 10 years of experience in the professional development field.
  • Effective oral and written skills.
  • Strong customer/client focus.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and administration skills.
  • Demonstrates strong ethical conduct and personal credibility to represent the school district.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize sound judgment and formulate appropriate responses to a wide variety of problems and situations.
  • Strong skills in planning, organizing, executing and evaluating activities.
  • Capable of maintaining confidentiality.



  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience in the educational field.


COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:  Maintains communication with school personnel, and administration to enhance cooperative action which will meet the development of a viable workforce. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations relevant to personnel processes. Ability to write reports, correspondence and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups;
