Director of Human Resources


Position Summary: Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operations Officer, the Director of Human Resources will lead the Human Resources function, which serves the needs of over 150 employees.  The Director of Human Resources balances both strategic and tactical responsibilities.  Responsibilities include developing and overseeing all human resource programs and policies, enhancing organizational communication in alignment with Chavez Schools’ culture and values, serving as direct point of contact for employee relations matters, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal employment regulations, providing ongoing strategic HR counsel to the leadership team, and developing and implementing strategic initiatives related to employee engagement, recognition, and retention. 


In an effort to ensure a strong mutual fit, it’s important for prospective candidates to possess demonstrated knowledge of HR best practice and compliance. Goals for the first year include placing focus on building HR practices, systems, and tools to support the Chavez Schools culture and environment and actively coaching dedicated HR team members. The successful candidate will be willing to roll up his/her sleeves, is a collaborative team player by nature, and has demonstrated experience balancing both tactical and strategic HR priorities.


The Company: Chavez Schools is a pioneer in the education reform movement in Washington DC and is the only school in DC with a public policy mission. We are a network of three charter schools across three campuses in Washington DC that offers employees the opportunity to focus on students’ academic growth, empowers professionals to utilize curriculum to create engaging lessons, and supports teachers with mentors, coaches and meaningful professional opportunities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee human resource plans, policies, and procedures in support of Chavez Schools’  
  • Identify, evaluate, implement, and monitor systems, tools, and templates to effectively support key HR activities   
  • Apply knowledge of local, state, and federal employment regulations to ensure compliance  
  • In collaboration with the Chief Financial and Operations Officer, establish and align HR strategic priorities with organization-wide strategic goals  
  • Serve as direct point of contact for employee relations matters; provide guidance, training, and advisory to supervisors on performance counseling issues  
  • Provide HR guidance and oversight of employee lifecycle activities, including but not limited to, onboarding, benefits, and compensation 
  • Partner with leadership team members on the implementation of Chavez Schools’ performance management process to ensure employees receive frequent performance and development feedback 
  • Develop and lead proactive, strategic initiatives to drive employee engagement, learning and development, employee recognition, and employee retention  
  • Serve as a champion of Chavez Schools’ culture and values; align HR practices, organizational communications, and approach with Chavez Schools’ organizational culture

  • Superior organizational and time management skills with the demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize and successfully manage high-stress situations 
  • High level of initiative, critical thinking, sound judgement and problem-solving skills  
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal HR laws and regulations
