The Director of Human Resources at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) provides leadership and direction for employee, physician and labor relations. The Director will serve as a strategic consultant to members of the UVMMC and Faculty Physician leadership teams on matters relating to HR services while offering guidance to deliver value added solutions. Through collaboration, the Director will work to develop, implement and integrate HR operations, policies and procedures with University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) HR Centers of Excellence.

The incumbent is responsible for providing leadership and developing and executing positive employee relations strategy in support of the strategic direction of the organization. As an integral member of the leadership team, oversees employee and labor relations and HR administrative support.

Reports to the Chief Experience Officer for UVMMC. Also reporting to the Chief Experience Officer is the Director of Patient Experience and the Manager of Health Management and EFAP. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources are the Manager of Employee Relations, Supervisor of Human Resources Operations/Support Services and the Labor Relations Specialist.



Bachelor’s Degree Required. Master's Degree preferred.


  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years’ experience in human resources management, five (5) years of which must have been in a leadership position.
  • Demonstrated Human Resources leadership experience within a complex organization is required.
  • Experience in leading change in a matrix environment is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience navigating complex HR and organizational issues to resolution, policy concept and development.
  • Proven ability to partner with leaders and HR at all levels and in diverse geographies to provide effective and strategic employee relations advice
  • A sound understanding of and experience with coaching, employee relations, leadership development, culture development and employee relations required. Demonstrated experience in labor relations strongly preferred.

  • Maintain strictest confidentiality in areas of patient, employee and physician relations.
  • Must be able to work in a rapidly changing healthcare environment and maintain a good understanding of Vermont, New York and Federal employment laws.
  • Must be able to research information and analyze data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations, and plans of action.
