Fielding Graduate University seeks an experienced professional to become a key staff member on the President’s team. This position is based from our Santa Barbara, CA headquarters.



The Human Resource Director provides the leadership of Fielding Graduate University Human Resources operations, including policy development, implementation, interpretation, and compliance. The position will be responsible for functional areas including; employee relations, benefits, compensation, classification and job analysis, performance management, employee safety, training and development, workforce planning, and employee engagement. The Human Resource Director will guide the day-to-day Human Resource operations and will lead the long-term operational, administrative, and continuous improvement efforts of the department. The position will serve as the Fielding Graduate University liaison for all legal matters pertaining to Human Resources. The Human Resource Director will serve as a member of the University Leadership Team, will be a member on assigned governance bodies, will provide occasional support to Board of Trustees Committees as appropriate and will collaborate with Fielding Staff Council and SFC Chair to promote staff engagement, address staff concerns and gain staff input on institutional decisions.

Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences (a Master’s degree is desirable) and 5 years in a leadership role in Human Resources, preferably in positions reporting to the President or CEO. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in a higher education setting. Applicants should possess the ability to offer sound professional advice to the President and other senior leaders, to prepare a wide variety of written documents for a range of audiences, and make oral presentations to groups both large and small. Candidates should be able to exercise tact and diplomacy, interact effectively with staff, faculty, and administration and represent Fielding in a positive manner. The applicant must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality, and to lead, develop, and manage a team of professional-level staff.

The ideal candidate will possess a professional, collaborative, and upbeat approach to their work. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines are essential to success in the role. Applicants should have advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and to use a variety of other tools including web portals, web conferencing software, etc.
