Stoel Rives LLP is seeking a Director of Human Resources to provide firm-wide strategic direction and daily oversight of the firm’s Human Resources department, which includes the Employee Benefits and Retirement functions. This individual is responsible for maximizing the utilization, efficiency and effectiveness of all department personnel, including the development and implementation of training and professional development programs that encourage firm and individual success.


As the leader of the Human Resources function, the Director of Human Resources serves as a trusted advisor to firm leadership and the Administrative Leadership Team, providing expert advice on all technical human resources issues, as well as perspective and counsel on personnel, developmental and organizational issues. This individual is responsible for ensuring the human resources services, policies, and programs foster a healthy, vibrant, and inclusive work environment and align with the Firm’s strategic goals and objectives.


The Director of Human Resources will foster an atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation that motivates employees, recognizes successes and retains strong performers.


Formal Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resource management, or related field is required;

  • Advanced degree and/or human resources related certification (e.g., SPHR) is highly desirable


    Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 10+ or more years of administrative management experience in a large law firm or professional service organization, with at least five years of human resource management experience and the requisite knowledge of compensation systems, benefits selection and administration, recruitment and selection, performance evaluations and management, engagement and retention, personnel policies, employee relations, training and development, reward and recognition programs, employee management, organizational development, and change management.

  • Must be able to strategically and tactically evaluate and implement sophisticated HR related policies and programs; be able to work with a variety of organizational leadership to build consensus around HR strategy and tactics; as well as have a proven ability to attract and retain outstanding talent, and assemble and motivate high performance teams.

  • Proven leadership abilities

  • Ability to work with only general direction, and provide direction and strategic guidance to other managers and supervisors

  • Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills

  • Capable of handling personnel matters with sensitivity and confidentiality and dealing with difficult situations and people

  • Must be able to communicate complex information and ideas effectively and efficiently to personnel at all levels of the firm with minimal preparation; rapidly analyze issues, anticipate consequences, make decisions, and initiate action

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of firm personnel and diverse groups of people

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and/or manage multiple projects at once, while maintaining appropriate attention to detail, often under difficult deadlines

  • Excellent judgment, analytical skills, and innovative thinking

  • Must possess the following technical/professional knowledge and experience: Extensive knowledge of current federal and state employment laws, including FMLA and state leave laws, ADA, civil rights, fair employment practices and associated reporting requirements, and wage and hour laws. Thorough knowledge of human resources management to anticipate and identify problems/issues in these areas and to recommend and implement alternative and appropriate courses of action.
