Barr is a 750-person engineering and environmental consulting organization working with clients across the Midwest, throughout the Americas, and around the world. We help clients develop, manage, process, and restore natural resources. Headquartered in Minneapolis, we have offices in Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota, Utah, and Alberta, Canada.

We are currently seeking a Director of Human Resources to provide strategic and tactical human resources leadership to Barr, working in a consultative role and as a subject matter expert with the CEO, COO, and other business unit and business support group leaders with delegated HR responsibilities. The Director also has direct management and oversight responsibility for the corporate HR team that supports Barr’s HR systems and processes. The Director may also serve as a member of ad hoc teams on various company and HR initiatives and sensitive cross-company matters as needed.

In collaboration with these individuals, the Director contributes to the creation, implementation, monitoring, measurement, and improvement of the company’s human resources-related strategies, policies, programs, processes, and systems. These are designed to support Barr’s strategic goal of building the best team possible to solve our clients’ complex problems and build a sustainable company by attracting, developing, and retaining a high-performing workforce and sustaining a culture and work environment that supports the company’s shared values and builds its reputation.

Successful execution of Barr’s HR strategies and programs is a responsibility shared by corporate HR and other subunits assigned to carry out selected HR functions.

NOTE: This is a full-time role requiring a significant presence in Barr’s corporate headquarters in Minneapolis. The company’s preference is that this person be based in Minneapolis, but we will consider candidates who would be located in our Duluth or Hibbing office, with significant time spent in Minneapolis and other offices throughout the US and Canada.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • bachelor’s degree in organizational development, human resources, business administration, learning and development, adult education, industrial psychology, or related field
  • 10+ years of HR generalist experience demonstrating increasing responsibility, including experience in several of the following areas: staffing, employee relations, training and development, coaching, workforce alignment, acquisitions, benefits, and compensation
  • 8+ years of both strategic and functional HR leadership experience
  • strong strategic and analytical thinking skills and problem-solving ability
  • demonstrated experience with planning, leading, and managing projects with team members representing a broad range of stakeholders
  • experience influencing without authority
  • ability to build collaborative internal relationships
  • ability to hold team members accountable to accept and support team decisions in a non-hierarchical organization
  • effective in gathering perspectives of, and developing support for ideas from, a diverse group of stakeholders in a consensus-based culture
  • ability to identify and clearly articulate complex issues and to develop tractable plans to address complex multi-dimensional problems
  • resilience and a positive attitude in the face of challenges
  • legal authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for sponsorship
