The Head Injury Association is currently seeking candidates for the position of Director of Human Resources.

The Head Injury Association (HIA) is a rapidly growing and prestigious not-for-profit agency located on Long Island. HIA’s mission is to maximize the potential of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivors and individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (IDD) by providing the necessary residential and community-based programs. The agency strives, by political and educational means, to ensure that individuals with disabilities have the necessary medical, rehabilitation, vocational and recreational systems available to support them so they may live with dignity in a comfortable and accessible environment. Job Description

The primary responsibility of the Director of Human Resources is to ensure that all agency departments are properly staffed with mission oriented individuals. In addition, the Director is responsible for establishing that the administration of human resources policies, programs and practices is effectively implemented throughout the agency. The HR Director is tasked with ensuring that all Human Resources policies and practices adhere to Federal, New York State and local labor laws. Specific responsibilities of this position include:

  • Ensures that training of all personnel policies, procedures, and practices conform to agency philosophy and regulatory standards, as assessed through supervisory review of documentation.
  • Develops and ensures that all Human Resources policies and procedures conform to Federal, State and Local Laws.
  • Ensures that all staff receive copies of the Employee Handbook and are thoroughly and properly trained in Personnel Policies, Procedures and Practices, as assessed through supervisory review and through coordination with the Training Coordinator.
  • Oversees the administration of the medical, dental, life, workers compensation, disability, voluntary insurance, agency liability and certificates of insurance programs, as evidenced by a supervisory review of status reports of the above.
  • Maintains all personnel files and ensures that all pertinent documentation conforms to Federal, New York State, and Local Labor Laws.
  • Develops and maintains a tracking system for all documentation within personal files and ensures confidentiality of all information in the personal files as assessed through supervisory review.
  • Tracks and reviews Department of Motor Vehicle Reports, PPD’s, Evaluations, etc., and informs all program administrators of problems that arise, as assessed through supervisory observation and review of documentation.
  • Manages recruitment of staff and application processes and ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies regarding documentation. Consults with agency Labor Relations Attorney and implements, if necessary, any Corrective Action Plan, as assessed through supervisory observation.
  • Provides employee relations and employment law expertise, as evidenced by a supervisory review of liability reports, disciplinary actions/reports and contacts with Agency attorney.
  • Conduct exit interviews with all staff.
  • Develops and implements employee recognition programs, as assessed through supervisory observation and feedback.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field from an accredited college or university. Related Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of progressive Human Resources experience and two (2) years of management experience in health care or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of employment law required.
  • Excellent computer skills necessary, knowledge of ADP Workforce Now preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
