The human resource and safety director is directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resource and safety functions. The position will partner with the company’s executive team and management to achieve strategic and operational goals of the business and departments.


Essential Functions

  1. Responsible for proposing, developing, implementing, and coordinating company programs, policies, and procedures covering all areas of Human Resources and Safety, including: employee relations, performance management, compensation, employee selection, recruitment, and talent development.
  2. Guides management and employee actions by researching, developing, writing, updating and recommending policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines.
  3. Communicates and promotes organizational values.
  4. Supports management by providing human resource advice, counsel, and decisions.
  5. Recommends, evaluates and participates in staff development for the organization.
  6. Works directly with department managers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities on personnel and safety matters.
  7. Maintains knowledge of industry trends, employment laws, safety regulations, and ensures organization's compliance in all jurisdictions.
  8. Maintains responsibility for organization compliance with federal, state and local laws pertaining to all personnel and safety matters.
  9. Collaborates with executive management and leads the annual review, preparation and administration of the organization's wage and salary program.
  10. Coordinates or conducts employee satisfaction surveys, exit interviews, and other methods of managing employee engagement.
  11. Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, or as directed by the President, on personnel matters.
  12. Develops and maintains a human resource information system that meets the organization's personnel information needs.
  13. Supervises the staff of the human resource and safety department.
  14. Participates on committees and special projects and seeks additional responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages all employees of the HR and safety departments and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within that department.

Work Environment

This job is based in an office environment, but includes time in manufacturing settings as well. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and smartphones.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position and can require extended hours and weekend work from time to time.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel mainly in the Midwest may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor's degree and 10+ years’ related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience in manufacturing or industrial type organization.
  3. Experience with safety and OSHA in manufacturing, industrial or service fields.
