Are you a strategic problem-solver with a hands on “doer” approach, with a passion for assessing risk?

The Director of Labor & Employee Relations is a role that has immense value here at Sonoco. Our HR organization is one that values forward thinking and trend valuation, and is looking for someone to help shape the future of our employee workforce. As a member of our HR Council, you’ll partner with the other HR Center of Excellence leaders to make impactful engagement strategies, policies and programs.

Come see what we’re all about.

Join a global community that seeds innovation and nurtures advancement! Sonoco has maintained a people-first focus for more than 117+ years while providing pioneering packaging services and making your favorite products every day. In our workplace, that means values of honesty, respect and support are engrained in every team. Talented, inspiring people like you have helped us grow into an award-winning, dynamic company with more than 330 facilities around the world.

Sonoco is a $5+ billion global manufacturer of consumer packaging, industrial products and protective packaging provider of packaging services for many of the world's best-known brands. Sonoco is proud of being named on Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies list.   We are world class in our abilities to allow employees to use their talent and skills to grow themselves, their careers and our Company.

Here’s what you need to know.

You will report directly to our VP of Human Resources. This position requires a Bachelors’ degree at minimum (ideally a Master’s degree, even better, a Juris Doctorate). Additionally, 10-15+ years of hands-on practical ER/LR experience is required, if you’ve worked in manufacturing or the industrial sector, that’s a major bonus. While Sonoco has a strong union avoidance stance, having experience negotiating union contracts is required as well. You’ll be responsible for setting our strategy around Union Avoidance, Negotiations and Employee Engagement. Collaboration is going to be a big piece too, since you’ll work to build relationships with business leaders, HR Business partners and other HR COE leaders to achieve ER/LR objectives. You’ll also be responsible for keeping the organization informed of future legal trends from an employee workforce standpoint.

This role will require moderate travel at times, as we have over 150 operations just in North America. As the Director of LR/ER you will have a primary focus on North American LR/ER activities, but it will expand in the near future as a part of the HR COE to being a connecting point to other regions for world best practices in ER/LR.

APPLY TODAY and help us grow better.

Global success hasn’t changed our tight-knit feel – we’ve simply grown into a larger, more diverse family. Take the next step and stake your future with a world-leading company that helps you excel and rewards your best efforts. We encourage and enable upward movement within the company, and we’ve built an industry-leading business on the philosophy that every person and every idea counts. Apply today and help us grow stronger.
