The University of Maryland College Park, University Human Resources department has a great opportunity for an experienced HR Leader seeking to enhance and develop strategic HR business partnerships. Leveraging deep expertise, innovative problem solving, and collaborative leadership, this role will provide help in providing world class HR client services. 

This role will report to the Chief Human Resources Officer and will be responsible for overseeing staff responsible for administering our client service areas.

The HR Client Solutions and Services Director will have exposure to and experience with all facets of HR, and have deep knowledge and expertise providing strategic and tactical oversight to the University’s employee and labor relations, compensation and classification, and benefits administration client services areas.

The ideal candidate will also be a resourceful and collaborative strategic thinker with a strong commitment to results and accountability. S/he must also be comfortable working with a broad range of college administrators and management staff in a diverse, unionized environment.



  • JD or Master’s degree in Human Resource Management or Business/Public Administration or related field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of demonstrated progressive HR experience, five (5) of which must be in senior role with oversight of multiple HR functions. Experience successfully leading and implementing innovative business change management initiatives to include program/process development and re-engineering, business/client systems implementation, and business/client services program/process monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience in negotiating and administering collective bargaining agreements, administering retirement plans, 403b, 401k, 457b, and defined contribution and defined benefit plans; experience managing and/or providing oversight to ADA/FMLA processes.
  • Experience in developing, designing, and implementing compensation plans and policies that accommodate a multifaceted environment and are competitive, equitable, and legally compliant. Experience developing and implementing career ladders and succession plans.


Knowledge, Skills Abilities:

  • Strong business acumen to understand key business drivers, organization communications and data, organizational and unit performances measures, as well as understand the impact and implications of decisions on leadership objectives.
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail; excellent analytical and problem-solving; keen negotiation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion in negotiating on behalf of the university with union representatives, as well as the State Higher Education Labor Relations Board.
  • Strong knowledge of the laws, regulations, principles, and procedures related to administering compensation, benefits, labor relations and negotiations.
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations pertaining to controversial and/or complex topics to employee groups and management at all levels of the university, as well as to external constituencies.
  • Ability to research information and analyze/synthesize complex data and information to create reports and presentations with valid conclusions derived from various sources.



  • CCP; CEBS; SHRM/HRCI Certifications
  • Experience in utilizing and implementing various job evaluation techniques.
  • Previous Human Resources experience in higher education.
