Director, Employee Engagement and Total Rewards

This position provides support and direction in the areas of employee relations, performance management, organizational culture and employee engagement.  Reporting to the Vice President of Human Resources, the Director will work across all functional lines within the agency to deliver strategic initiatives, develop, implement and manage all employee relations, performance management, management coaching, employee disciplinary matters, employee engagement and cultural initiatives.

The Director, Employee Engagement and Total Rewards will work closely with the Director, Talent Acquisition & HRIS, and Director of Training and Development to provide succinct, collaborative, aligned HR Management to the Home. It is a high visibility position and will interact with the senior management team of The Home and engage all Home staff.  They are also responsible in ensuring that the functions for which they are accountable deliver outstanding customer service to all levels of the organization.  Manages progress against agency and strategic plan goals within the purview of this area.

Essential Functions

  • Work closely with employees at all levels in delivering support and implementing programs
  • Assist the Vice President of Human Resources in developing and implementing all goals and objectives of the Senior Management Team
  • Develop and implement all employee surveys and focus groups, propose management actions
  • Review, update and manage employment legislative changes
  • Maintains appropriate outreach to associations, boards and legislative updates

Employee Relations & Performance Management

  • Proactively manage the employee relations within the organization developing strategies to address systemic issues that contribute to turnover and poor employee performance
  • Provide prompt attention to employee relations matters
  • Facilitate, give and advice and support the progressive disciplinary process
  • Perform employee investigations, write up results and findings, propose appropriate disciplinary actions, coach and assist managers with disciplinary actions
  • Work in concert with Risk Management on multi-faceted employee investigations and attend Risk Management Review Meetings

Benefits & Total Rewards

  • Manages the design, implementation and administration of employee benefit programs such as health and dental insurance, retirement, flexible spending accounts, disability insurance, tuition reimbursement, employee assistance, and other benefits and services
  • Negotiates and contracts with benefit plan providers, vendors, and brokers for services, premiums, plan administration, initial offering and ongoing plan administration in order to implement and make recommendations for new plans or modify existing benefit plans and/or vendor agreements
  • Manage employee handbook updates for benefits, compensation and HRIS policies


  • Regularly assesses and manages the effectiveness of The Home’s compensation program, including base pay, salary structure and merit process and manages the administration.  Also responsible for monitoring and assessing Executive compensation for the agency.
  • Oversees the addition of new positions within the compensation structure for appropriateness with the compensation structure
  • Oversees research of competitiveness of current pay scales, participates and analyzes salary surveys and makes specific recommendations for review by Vice President of Human Resources


  • Bachelor’s degree and/or at least 10 years of experience, SPHR a plus
  • Strong communication, customer relations, and analysis skills
  • Adept at organization, documentation, and technical proficiency
  • Team player with high level of professionalism
  • Preferred: prior experience with child welfare or non for profit organizations
  • Must demonstrate discretion and professionalism at all times and maintain confidentiality related to department/agency matters
  • Must be skilled in synthesizing information from multiple sources
  • Strong project management skills required
  • Excellent analytic and written communication skills required. Experience successfully conducting extensive interviews is essential
