The Director of Compensation directs the planning, administration and implementation of wage and salary management programs (non-staff) for the Cleveland Clinic Enterprise. Plans and administers all pay programs within the guidelines of established policies. Manages the conduct of participation in wage and salary surveys and recommends changes to ensure the maintenance of the enterprises’ compensation philosophy, objectives and strategy to maintain competitiveness in the marketplace.
 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manages the conduct and preparation of compensation reviews across Cleveland Clinic Enterprise.
  • Develops the schedule of reviews, manages the progress and consults with management.
  • Develops an annual process in tandem with finance and senior leaders to ensure effective spend of the approximate salary budget of $2.1 Billion.
  • Develops and implements systematic compensation tools to permit comprehensive and efficient analyses.
  • Monitors changes in the healthcare job market ensuring Cleveland Clinic is able to recruit, retain and reward top talent.
  • Meets with executives to plan compensation reviews and consults on compensation/total rewards issues.
  • Directs the participation in all salary surveys.
  • May conduct physician compensation reviews.
  • Develops overall compensation communications strategies.
  • Drafts and reviews communications on compensation topics throughout the system.
  • Researches current and upcoming regulatory issues and acts as technical expert on compensation issues.
  • Provides advice on pay decisions, policy and guideline interpretation and job evaluation including the design of creative solutions to specific compensation-related programs.
  • Develops related policies as needed.
  • Takes an active role in healthcare and human resources associations to maintain an awareness of changing trends in compensation.
  • Designs and reviews executive compensation programs.
  • Designs, calculates and communicates executive pay plans.
  • Manages annual executive compensation review and interim reviews.
  • Conducts ad hoc comp studies, as requested.
  • Manages or supports special projects in Compensation and Benefits or Human Resources.
  • Participants in and provide support during bargaining agreement negotiations. Educate and
  • Plans, develop, lead and implements communications with caregivers, executives and HR staff to develop an understanding of the compensation practices and strategy at Cleveland Clinic.
  • Participates and/or leads various committees and task force teams.
  • Continuously works with executives, leaders and HR staff to evolve the Compensation department into a Center of Excellence providing value to the enterprise and as a strategic partner in collaboration with the HR Call Center.
  • Consults and advise executives, senior leaders and HR Business Partners on various initiatives that will bring value and outcomes for their respective business.
  • Recommends market driven and appropriate pay programs, policies and procedures to such groups.
  • Works as a strategic partner with OPSA Staff compensation.
  • Develops and maintains contacts, within or outside the Company, as a Company representative in a specialized area of knowledge or technical field.
  • Requires considerable tact and discretion, and some persuasion to obtain approvals, consent and action.
  • Manages and develops compensation staff.
  • Provides training and coaching to staff.
  • Develops and discusses annual goals and performance evaluations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Management or related field required. Master's Degree preferred. 

Certifications:

  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) or SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of seven years of progressive human resources experience, including at least three years management experience.
  • Health care experience preferred.
