Job Summary:


Serve as an integral member our dynamic, global corporate legal and compliance department. Assists professional legal staff in (i) the review and preparation of legal documents, (ii) analysis of information pertaining to corporate legal, litigation or compliance matters, and (iii) other legal or compliance-related projects. Continue to promote the department’s reputation and values of being approachable, responsive, practical, transparent, and collaborative.

  • Working at the direction of the General Counsel / Chief Compliance Officer and/or Associate General Counsel perform research on and analysis for, data and information pertaining a broad variety of legal topics. Such matters may include:
    • Intellectual Property (patents and/or trademarks), including tracking and maintenance of patent and trademark portfolio, gathering information for new patent applications, liaising with outside counsel, and preparing documents for applications and renewals
    • Employment law
    • Contracts
    • Record maintenance
    • Corporate governance, including preparing and managing documents, preparing for meetings, and helping with maintenance of Directors and Officers
    • Processing and coordinating information for litigation-related claims, including responding to internal and external requests for claims information
  • Working at the direction of the General Counsel / Chief Compliance Officer and/or Associate General Counsel, supervise Chesterton’s Compliance Program. Responsible for developing, managing, and/or driving certain projects.
    • Manage, supervise, and support communication, translation and employee education projects.
    • Develop compliance content including informational and collateral materials, in print and multimedia.
    • Support Compliance Committee work, including meeting minutes, agendas and action items.As required, in teams or individual meetings, provide compliance training to employees.
    • Provide administrative support as requested, i.e.; responds to verbal and written inquiries and requests from outside counsel.
    • Completes special projects and tasks as required.

Complexity of Duties:


  • Works with minimum supervision on routine tasks; while most decisions are made based on both pre-established policies and procedures, some decisions are made using functional proficiency/professional judgment.
  • Special instructions given for new assignments.
  • Higher level of authority necessary when working beyond semi-routine complexity.   
  • Detailed instruction given for new lines of work or special assignments. Responsibilities are sometimes repetitive, but exercise of discretion is required.
  • Contacts are both internal and external. Contacts are both within and outside the United States.

  • Strong Microsoft Office suite experience, including expert-level Power Point. Expert-level Excel skills a plus.
  • Experience with or understanding of legal topics
  • Superb written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to proofread and correct documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to input high-stakes data effectively and efficiently
  • Strong organizational skills to execute, track, and follow up on various projects with attention to detail.
  • Multilingual ability (Chinese, German, Spanish) a plus.

Education and/or Experience:


  • 4+ years of legal and/or compliance experience or equivalent required  
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred         
  • Paralegal skills or experience preferred

Physical Demands: 


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to sit/work at a computer terminal for periods of time. Moderate noise (i.e.: computer printers, traffic) exists daily in the work environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
