POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Coordinator of Employee and Labor Relations will support and assist the Associate Vice President of Human Resources (AVP) in serving as thought leader/coach/mentor within the multiple facets of employee relations. Passionate about building a solid foundation of excellent employee relations practices and nurturing a positive work culture, the Coordinator of Employee and Labor Relations will develop practices that proactively reduce employee relations problems and enhance the overall work environment, with a commitment to creating practices and programs that enhance employee engagement in a diverse, student-centric and community-based work environment. Responsible for a variety of functions and activities related to employee and labor relations, including but not limited to conflict prevention/resolution, grievance administration, investigations and progressive discipline. Must work collaboratively with the College and Union leadership to maintain and foster positive professional relationships and remain current on trends and applicable labor laws.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Foster and maintain effective professional relationship with administrators, employees, colleagues and Union leaders/representatives
  • Exercise critical judgment in analyzing complex employee relations problems and formulating strategic and time-sensitive recommendations in consultation with the AVP
  • Provide employee relations guidance via collectively bargained agreements (CBA) interpretation, investigation and advice on a full range of employee relations matters including, but not limited to, informal and formal grievances, development of performance management plans, employee assistance referrals, investigation of and response to complaints and providing counsel and assistance to administrators/supervisors/senior leadership regarding reduction in force or reorganization processes
  • Provide information, advice and assistance to administrators/supervisors regarding application of statutes, regulations, contracts and employee relations practices
  • In collaboration with AVP, take a lead role in the evaluation of the College’s employee engagement and develop strategies to address gaps or make improvements that support the College’s efforts as an outstanding place to work
  • Establish and maintain relationships with administrators and Union leadership to stay abreast and assist in the prevention of employee relations issues
  • Conduct confidential fact-finding investigations and inquiries, including, but not limited to, employee claims, employee/supervisor conflict resolution, grievances, ethics, investigations or Title IX complaints.
  • Lead the progressive disciplinary process in consultation with AVP. Conduct meetings for disciplinary matters, grievance administration, termination/discharge, and progressive discipline. Write and/or draft communications related to employment and labor relations activities
  • Work with supervisors to develop, implement and track performance improvement plans
  • Research and analyze employment and labor law, compensation/market rates, workforce needs and market information as it may relate to the college environment, collective bargaining or workplace solutions
  • In collaboration with the Director of Recruitment and Staffing, participate in the annual performance evaluation process, including reviewing all performance reviews to identify follow up as needed. Keep AVP appraised of any trends or concerns that may need further intervention, training or follow up
  • Participate in the development and delivery of training programs designed to advance the human resources skills of the administrators/supervisors within the College
  • Responsible for the timely processing of unemployment claims, protests, hearings, and payments, focusing efforts on reducing the College’s liability
  • Conduct employee exit interviews, compile and evaluate data for sharing with HR administration. Update exit process as needed, to capture meaningful data
  • Update and maintain reports, including, but not limited to the Staff Union Seniority List
  • Maintain current knowledge of employment laws including, but not limited to EEO and Affirmative Action guidelines, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), FMLA, etc.
  • Assist the AVP with contract negotiations, as needed
  • Assist the AVP with Title IX and Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), as needed
  • Participate in college AQIP teams/external programs, as approved by the AVP
  • Assist with the employee appreciation and recognition initiatives, including responsibility for “Employee of the Year” type programs
  • Encourage positive employee relations through active involvement in departmental meetings across campus and participation in campus activities
  • Responsible for all other duties as assigned by AVP of HR


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / EXPERIENCE):

 

  • A combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.   Generally, this would include:
    • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
    • Four years’ experience in Human Resources
      • Direct experience in employee and labor relations, in an organization of comparable scope and size
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of employee and labor relations, collective bargaining and employment laws and demonstrated skill in the practical application of employment laws
  • Ability to reconcile employee and labor relations issues within the context of both the existing CBAs and desired future state of labor and employee relations at the College
  • Experience and confidence in dealing with confrontational situations including employee to employee and employee/supervisor conflict resolution
  • Experience in conducting investigations
