Position Summary:

The Benefits Specialist is responsible for assisting with the administration of UJA-Federation’s health and welfare employee benefit plans, including health, dental, life insurance, disability, flexible spending accounts (FSAs), workers' compensation, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), New York State’s Paid Family Leave (PFL), and COBRA.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with the administration and coordination of benefits for our organization, including non-union and union employees.

  2. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of group benefits programs.

  3. Manages and processes all benefit enrollments, terminations, changes, and leaves of absences.

  4. Meets with employees and educates them on their benefits plans.

  5. Resolves employee questions and problems by interpreting benefit policies and procedures, and investigating issues of concern with vendors.

  6. Maintains strong working relationships with insurance carriers and vendors to ensure effective and consistent management and administration of our benefit programs.

  7. Coordinates wellness programs and events with Director of Benefits.

  8. Analyzes and reconciles monthly bills and submits requests for payment to accounting department.

  9. Provides and generates proactive communications to employees relating to benefits enrollment and other benefit changes.

  10. Keeps abreast of federal, state, and local laws/regulations to ensure benefit plan/policy compliance.

  11. Assists in pension plan administration.

  12. Orders benefit enrollment materials for employee new-hire packets.

  13. Maintains employee benefit files and ensures accurate record keeping.

 

Competencies/Experience:

  • Four years of experience in benefits administration required.

  • Extensive technical knowledge in employee benefits, including a thorough understanding of related state and federal laws.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.

  • Well-developed collaboration and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with consistent follow-through.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • High level of competence with operating and utilizing Microsoft Office and HRIS systems.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field.
