Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies has an opening in our San Francisco location for an AVP of Human Resources. The Assistant Vice President, Human Resources is responsible for directing all of the people functions of the organization. This position provides the strategic human resource planning, vision and direction for human capital strategy in alignment with our mission, operational goals, and evolving business. As a member of the Senior Leadership team, this position manages all HR functional areas including talent acquisition and management, learning and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations and engagement, and HR operations. Through thought leadership and collaboration this leader builds and maintains effective relationships at all levels of the organization from front line employees to the Executive Team.


  • Plans, develops, implements, directs and evaluates human resource strategies, practices, policies and performance to ensure desired outcomes are achieved in alignment with the company’s operational goals.
  • Translates strategic and tactical business plans into HR strategic and operational plans.
  • Executes company-wide strategy for talent acquisition, onboarding, development and retention of a high quality, diverse and inclusive workforce. Oversees development and application of quality of hire and other HR benchmarks and metrics, and analyzes same to measure HR effectiveness.
  • Partners with Senior Leadership to provide organizational development consultation and advice related to organizational change and impact.
  • Plans and implements systems that fulfill the mission and goals of the department and organization efficiently and effectively. Evaluates and improves the efficiency of processes and procedures to enhance speed, quality, efficiency and output. Allocates resources to effectively staff and accomplish the work to meet departmental productivity and quality goals.
  • Provides guidance in the interpretation of human resource guidelines and laws to management and staff regarding work-related issues, creating an environment of empowerment and accountability. Works to create a workplace culture consistent with the Company’s and which emphasizes the mission, vision, guiding principles and values of our organization.
  • Regularly reviews and updates Employee Handbook, policies, and supporting procedures to maintain effective employee relations company-wide.
  • Establishes and maintains credibility throughout the organization as an effective listener and problem solver of people issues.
  • Develops and maintains a progressive, competitive and proactive compensation and benefits program that motivates, incents, rewards and assists with employee retention, ensuring compensation structures and ranges are effective. Maintains cost-effective, mutually beneficial relationships with third party plan providers.
  • Assesses the competitiveness of programs and practices against relevant comparable companies, industries and markets. Keeps informed of new and innovative practices in Human Resources through continuing education, networking, and active participation with professional associations.



  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in business, Human Resource Management, or closely related field.
  • Experience: Eight to ten years of progressively responsible human resource supervisory and management experience, with a minimum of three (3) years at Director level or above; or, minimum five years senior management or executive level role wherein responsibilities included functional and strategic aspects of business or human resources, with a proven ability to demonstrate measurable results of human capital and cultural transformation through analytics and metrics.
  • Certificates and Licenses: SPHR, or SHRM-SCP certification strongly preferred.
  • Language: Ability to read analyze, interpret and advise regarding complex federal, state and local employment regulations and associated legal documentation; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, staff, and the general public; Ability to successfully review other’s work products and provide appropriate feedback.
  • Reasoning: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Math: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume; Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
  • Computer: Proficiency in Microsoft Office software; and on applicable databases, systems and vendor software programs.
  • Technical: Knowledge of office operations, workflow analysis, and current technologies in HRIS, applicant tracking, benefit administration, and payroll.
