The University of West Georgia seeks to fill the position of Assistant Vice President of Human Resources. The Chief Human Resources Officer and Assistant Vice President for Human Resources for the University of West Georgia serves as a strategic partner and leader for the institution. This position provides overall leadership for and management of the university's strategy for Human Resources, Title IX and Social Equity in support of the university's mission, vision, values, and strategic goals. The position reports to the Vice President for Business and Finance also serves as a standing member of the President’s Cabinet providing guidance and advice to the senior leadership team.

The scope of the Chief Human Resources Officer and Assistant VP role includes matters related to: benefits, classification & compensation, data management, employee relations, employee engagement, employment, immigration, organizational development, and regulatory compliance. The position interfaces with employees at all levels within the institution, University System of Georgia and other state, federal, and support organizations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic and operational guidance to the UWG Human Resources staff which is comprised of 21 full-time employees, 2 student assistants
  • Design, develop, recommend, and implement strategies to support, improve and strengthen the Human Resources Department and services.
  • Establish Human Resources departmental goals, activities, objectives and policies; hires and supervises HR staff; aligns the staff competencies and talents with institutional goals.
  • Budgetary oversight includes a $1.3 million-dollar departmental budget and contribute to institutional level decisions as to the usage of funds such as implementation of campus salary decisions large and small scale.
  • Oversee faculty and staff employment practices, employee relations, benefits administration, employee database management, regulation compliance, and providing relevant institution-wide opportunities for training and professional development.
  • Ability to manage compensation structures and ability to oversee large scale compensation studies and maintenance of institutional structures.
  • Institutional responsibility for faculty and staff immigration.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends as well as possess the ability to utilize data, produces reports, and make strategic recommendations to institutional leaders.
  • Oversee and manage HR system(s) integrity through regular maintenance and auditing of changes to HR database and systems, records and files.
  • Effectively communicate with broad audiences in written and verbal capacities.
  • Serve in an executive capacity to the President and Vice Presidents as it relates to strategic planning and organizational development with a particular focus on employee engagement and professional development concepts.
  • Advise senior leadership in all matters related to the scope of position with focused efforts on managing complex and sensitive employee relations matters
  • Title IX and Social Equity oversight and management to include Affirmative Action plans and campus education within scope of role
  • The position interfaces with employees at all levels within the institution, University System of Georgia and other state, federal, and support organizations to include service on strategic committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:                            

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in a related field to business, human resources, organizational development.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of HR experience, with at least three (3) years of HR leadership experience.
  • Certificate in Human Resources, such as the PHR/SPHR Certification or SHRM/SHRM-CP Certification.
  • Broad knowledge of human resources is required.
  • Knowledge of federal and state labor and employment laws and regulations, and other regulatory compliance to the scope of position.
  • Knowledge and experience with HRIS software.
  • Working knowledge of Title IX and Social Equity
  • Ability to effectively delegate and manage multiple projects/priorities
  • Strong verbal and written communication to include presentation skills
  • Strong listening and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make decisions, exhibit sound and accurate judgement in a timely manner
  • Ability to respectfully work with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications:            

  • Doctorate degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Previous experience in higher education or a government agency.
  • Experience at the Chief HR Officer level
