The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky is currently seeking an Assistant Director for Human Resources to coordinate HR policies and programs with emphasis on the benefits and compensation areas, insuring that the organization is in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations. In addition, the position works closely with the director of human resources in developing, implementing and evaluating ongoing HR policies, programs, functions and activities. The position also assists with associate relations for the University.


  1. Plan, direct and supervise all activities relating to administration and maintenance of compensation and employee benefits programs. Develop, implement and control programs in a manner that ensures cost effectiveness, market competitiveness and internal equity among employees.
  2. Administer benefits programs, including conducting analysis and serving as primary contract with providers (including group health and life), workers' compensation, unemployment and retirement plans.
  3. Assist the HR director in the daily administration of other HR services as directed or assigned, including recruitment and selection, promotions, transfers, contract negotiation and administration, affirmative action/EEO compliance, job classification, performance evaluation, and employee relations in accordance with quality management principles and overall objectives of the organization.
  4. Develop, prepare, generate and analyze ongoing and ad-hoc special reports pertaining to employee personnel information and data, including issues such as benefits costs, staffing levels/deployment, turnover, absenteeism, recruitment, applicant tracking, affirmative action/EEO, compensation, promotions, etc. Effectively utilize the data processing system to obtain, store and analyze pertinent data and information.
  5. Maintain and expand knowledge and understanding of existing and proposed federal and state laws/regulations affecting human resource management. Identify trends that could affect organizational objectives and/or operational resources. Interpret appropriate laws and policies and advise management, employees and retirees accordingly.


Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisor, employees of the institution, as well as vendors in order to answer questions, obtain quotes and make sure paperwork is completed. These relationships are maintained through e-mail, fax, telephone, and person-to-person contact.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position manages the benefits administration for all employees and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of these employees. This position also acts as coach and mentor to all other employees in the HR department.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.


Travel is minimal, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in human resources or related field.
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) is preferred. Willingness to obtain within one year is expected.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in human resources.
  • Prior experience with payroll and benefits management.
