OVERVIEW

The focus of this job is on achieving results which are aligned with the larger picture of the organization and its strategic goals. Initiative, coupled with a sense of competitive drive, and the ability to stay focused on results despite changing conditions, is the key to achieving the performance objectives of this job. Because environmental and organizational conditions change rapidly, the work involves innovation and creativity in generating ideas for quick response. Decision-making is focused on implementing practical, timely solutions. The job requires getting things done quickly and handling a variety of activities. Self-assurance, and the confidence to purposely drive toward results while constantly problem-solving and engaging the commitment of others is essential. A leadership style that is firm and goal oriented, and yet motivates, trains, and engages others in an enthusiastic way is important. The emphasis on building rapport and relationships with individuals and groups requires an outgoing, poised and persuasive communication style. Because the pace of the work is faster than average, the ability to learn quickly and thoroughly while continually recognizing and adapting to changing conditions is critical. The scope of the job may require effective delegation to proven people. Especially routine and repetitive details should be delegated but with responsibility for follow up and accountability for timely results. While the job requires the ability to act independently, a sense of urgency and the confidence to handle a variety of challenges, a full commitment to the success of the business and high standards of achievement are expected in this position. The emphasis is on results, and effective systems that achieve results through and with people, rather than on the details of implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 Strategic

  • Leading the development of people-related strategies, including employee engagement, that support Newfields vision and mission and drive the long terms strategic goals of the organization.
  • Working in close relationship with the Human Resources and Oversight Committee and senior staff to develop human resources-related strategies and policies and analyzing the effectiveness of these policies
  • Developing compensation philosophy and strategies to support organization-wide goals, including those related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (“DEIA”)
  • Participating in organizational strategic planning initiatives and ensuring HR plans align with our mission and business objectives
  • Advising senior leaders and people managers on HR-related opportunities and concerns
  • Providing an equity lens to HR-related decisions, including policies, promotions and hiring
  • Managing engagements with HR-related consultants including those related to training, leadership assessment and development, development of HR policies and strategies, and HR-related DEIA initiatives
  • Investing energy to build relationships and practices, to develop an understanding of key issues affecting our team, to build an inclusive and equitable environment
  • Being involved in the community and community service outside of Newfields

Talent Acquisition and Management

  • Crafting talent acquisition and development strategies to build strong pipelines for future hiring needs with a focus on DEIA
  • Ensuring our hiring, onboarding and talent management procedures are effective, equitable, and inclusive
  • Providing leaders with the processes, tools, and consultation to effectively guide employee career development plans
  • Encouraging employee development by determining training needs, identifying resources needed to effectively develop and deliver appropriate training
  • Promoting equity and inclusion in the workplace and reinforcing these ideals in every aspect of the human resources function

Employee Engagement

  • Cultivating a positive working environment by monitoring employee relations, encouraging staff activities, and providing ongoing supervisor coaching and training
  • Overseeing the employee benefits processes, ensuring that a competitive and well-managed benefit package is available to staff
  • Encourages, models, and promotes an anti-racist workplace culture
  • As real-time situations arise and supporting conflict resolution and harm prevention and reduction strategies
  • Providing organizational support by helping to assist employees when problematic situations arise, managing with grace and with an eye to empower and guide conversations
  • Champions an equity lens on the senior management team to ensure consideration and accountability in matters of organizational effectiveness

 Administration and Compliance

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining HR policies across the organization
  • Maintaining awareness of current trends and applicable employment and benefit law
  • Directing proposed policies/procedures to ensure not only that Newfields remains competitive and compliant, but also that staff receive guidance and interpretation of policies and procedures
  • Being accountable for all aspects of HR compliance and implementation
  • Developing and managing budgets to support the organization-wide goals related to this position
  • Directly supervises the Director of HR and oversees the HR staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws

Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of ten (10) years HR experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Significant work experience as a Chief HR/People Officer, VP of HR or similar role with proven results in a leadership role
  • Experience as a leader in developing and implementing DEIA-related initiatives, including evidence of a commitment to ongoing personal learning and development
  • Experience in organizational strategic planning and strategy implementation
  • In-depth knowledge of all HR functions and policies and HRIS software capabilities
  • Proven ability to foster strong organization-wide communication and problem-solving skills
  • Certifications, such as HRCI/SHRM or related commitment to ongoing learning and development

REQUIRED SKILLS

Oral and Written Communication Skills

Must be able to communicate diplomatically and enthusiastically with a diverse group of staff, members, and guests. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff at all levels, board members, guests, and the public in a constructive and diplomatic manner required.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate mathematical figures and ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to analyze compensation numbers.

 Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, spreadsheet, diagram, or schedule form.

 Other Skills and Abilities

Excellent computer skills, including ability to work in multiple systems. Exceptional attention to detail. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks. Big picture strategic thinker with ability to translate holistic concepts into day-to-day activities for staff.  Ability to motivate large teams of staff and volunteers.
